The 4 John Hutton Grandsons of John Hutton and Jane Dixon of Washington Co., VA - Who Did They Marry?

Diana Powell (www.ramblingroots.com), Bob and Donna Jean Ford, 2012

When John Hutton and his wife Jane Dixon arrived in Washington County, Virginia in the early 1780s, they brought with them 5 sons, at least 4 of whom passed the name John Hutton to the next generation. These younger John Huttons all married; two of them twice. Part I below presents an analysis of these John Hutton marriages. Part II comments on the manuscript Pioneer Heritage - A Genealogy of One Branch of the Hutton Family.

John Hutton and Jane Dixon's 5 sons with the 4 known John Hutton grandsons:

James Hutton (marr Isabel Orr)

Edward Hutton (marr #1 Frances Hayter)

Leonard Hutton (marr #1 Martha McCall)

Dickson Hutton

  • son Isaac may have been Isaac John or John Isaac Hutton

(Conclusions and documentation):

John, son of Leonard Hutton and Martha McCall, married #1 Catherine Philips on 11 Dec. 1817 in Washington Co., VA, and #2 Polly Wertham on 30 Nov. 1842 in Smyth Co., VA. John and Catherine/Mary remained in Virginia.

  • John Hutton purchased two lots (one in Sept. 1821 and one in Sept. 1822) in that part of Wythe Co., VA that became Smyth County in 1832.5,6 They appear to have been part of the extinct town of Leggatsville. Leonard Hutton purchased 3 lots on the same street in 1824.7
  • John and CATHERINE sold their lots in 1825.8,9
  • John Hutton and CATHERINE, his wife, purchased 81 acres from Stephen and Margaret Wheeler on 18 Dec. 1825 in that part of Washington Co., VA which became Smyth County.10
  • The 1830 Washington Co. census entry for “John Hutton, son of Len” indicates one male age 30-39 and one female age 30-39. No children are indicated.11
  • From June 1843 through May 1844 John Hutton and MARY, his wife, of Smyth Co., VA, executed a series of deeds whereby they sold Thomas Myers the same 81 acres purchased by John and Catherine in 1825.12,13,14
  • John Hutton was enumerated in Smyth Co., VA in 1850. He was 60 yrs old, a blacksmith and lived on his own. Many other descendants of Leonard Hutton were neighbors. Mary was not enumerated with him, but was recorded a few doors away (age 52) with a 21 year old Mary “Wathem”.15
  • John Hutton died on 17 Jan. 1854 in Smyth Co. The Smyth Co. death record states that he was the son of “Linard”. It also states that he was a blacksmith and that he was married.16

John, son of Edward Hutton and Frances Hayter, and Elizabeth McDaniel, d/o Columbus McDaniel/McDonald were issued a marriage bond on 12 Sept. 1815 in Wythe Co., Virginia. John and Elizabeth migrated to Missouri.

  • The September 12, 1815 bond for the marriage of John Hutton and Elizabeth McDaniel named Columbus McDaniel as her father. The bondsman was Absalom McDaniel.1
  • Amon McDaniel was appointed Constable in Wythe Co., Virginia on 14 June 1808.17. He is believed to have been a son of Columbus McDaniel. A son of Columbus is believed to have drowned, leaving no family.18
  • The will of Columbus McDaniel, written 20 Jul 1821 in Wythe Co., VA, mentioned John Hutton but did not state a relationship.19
  • John Hutton and his wife lived with Columbus McDaniel in Wythe Co. for a short time around 1818-1819. They then returned to Washington County. John Hutton filed suit against Columbus’ heirs after his death. Edward Hutton signed papers in support of John Hutton. The suit states that John Hutton's wife was the daughter of Columbus McDaniel and that she gave birth to a daughter Sally while she and John lived with Columbus.20
  • In Sept. 1820 Edward Hutton purchased a tract of land in Washington Co. not far from the land on which he lived.21
  • In Oct. 1830 Edward Hutton sold the same land. The deed noted that John Hutton, son of Edward, lived on the land.21
  • The 1830 Washington Co. census included an entry for a John Hutton with a household consisting of a 16-25 yr old male, a 26-44 yr old female, 2 males under 9 and 1 female under 9.22
  • There is no corresponding John Hutton entry in 1840 in Washington Co., VA; no probate record exists suggesting John Hutton died in Virginia.
  • Sarah Hutton married Augustine Hawkins in Gasconade Co., MO in 1834.23
  • John Hutton acquired land in Franklin Co., Missouri in Sept. 1835.24
  • John Hutton and ELIZABETH, his wife, sold the same parcel in Nov. 1835.25
  • John Hutton was enumerated on the 1840 census for Gasconade Co.; no wife appears to be present.26 John does not appear on the 1850 census.
  • Columbus McDaniel’s 1821 Wythe Co. will named Absalom McDaniel. Absalom McDaniel migrated to Missouri where his will was probated in 1829. His heirs included sons Amon and Milton.27
  • The 1850 census of Osage Co. Missouri (created from Gasconade Co. in 1841) included:
  • Edward Hutton (Benton Twp, Fam 511, Edward b. VA) 28
Nancy Branson (Crawford Twp, Fam 324, Nancy, b. VA).31 Andrew Branson married Nancy Hutton in 1845 in Osage Co., MO.32 Columbus Hutton (b. VA) was enumerated with Andrew and Nancy Branson in 1850.
Francis Branson (District 66, Fam 17, Francis [sic] b. VA). 33 Madison Branson married Faney [Frances] S. Hutton in 1842 in Osage Co., MO. 34
  • Sarah Hawkins [Augustine Hawkins died in 1856], resided a few households from Amon and Edward Hutton in St. Clair Co., Missouri in 1860. 35 Sarah's middle name was Bernetta.36 Edward Hutton named a daughter Bernetta.
  • The Missouri death certificate of John M[ilton] Hutton (22 Feb. 1910) does not name his father, but states that John M. Hutton was born in “Washburn Co. WV”.37
  • The autobiography of Dr. Vardary Amon Hutton states his grandfather was Amon Hutton and that Amon’s father was John Hutton, a supposed wealthy Virginia Planter.38
  • Male descendants of the John Hutton who settled in Osage Co., MO have participated in the Hutton-DNA project. They very closely matched descendants of John Hutton and Jane Dixon who remained in Washington and/or Smyth County, Virginia.

John, son of James Hutton and Isabel Orr, married his first cousin, Susannah Hutton, d/o John Hutton and Mary Ann Cunningham on 29 Aug. 1822 in Washington Co., Virginia. John and Susannah migrated to Kentucky

  • Various documents, including a Washington Co. Chancery case50, establish that Sarah V. Hutton was the daughter of John Hutton and Rebecca Evitt and that Rebecca died in 1838.
  • Sarah Hutton married William Johnston in June 1856.51 Following the death of John Hutton, William initiated a suit to facilitate the division of John Hutton's land between Sarah and her younger half-brother, Samuel [son of John Hutton and Ann Jane Scott].52

Was there a John, son of Dixon/Dickson Hutton? Or, was Isaac, son of Dickson Hutton and Jane Jamison, who married Eleanor Snodgrass, on 8 March 1837, in Washington Co., VA, actually John Isaac or Isaac John Hutton?

  • In 1838 the Virginia Governor's office requested all Virginia clerks to report the number of individuals in the county who signed their name on marriage bonds with a mark during the years 1817, 1827, and 1837. Among the list of those for whom marriage bonds were issued in Washington Co. in 1837 and who could not write, but who were known to be the sons of parents able to send them to school, was this entry: "John Hutton, son of Dickson". The bride's name was not stated.53

There are two Hutton grooms listed in the Washington Co. marriage register for 1837: John Hutton to Rebecca Evitt and Isaac Hutton to Eleanor Snodgrass. John Hutton was the son of John Hutton and Mary Ann Cunningham. Isaac Hutton was the son of Dickson Hutton but there is no known record of Dickson Hutton having an additional son named John. Hence, either Issac of the 1837 marriage entry was actually John Issac Hutton (or Isaac John Hutton), or this John Hutton was an additional, previously unknown son of Dixon Hutton. If that is the case his marriage was not recorded in the Washington Co. marriage register (the existing register is not original) and there is no further sign of him in the later Washington Co. or Smyth Co. records. Dickson's 1835 will mentioned sons Isaac, Washington and William. It is also possible the clerk erred in his report to the Governor's office.

Part II:

In 1960 Roy Ball, a descendant of John Milton Hutton, compiled a manuscript titled Pioneer Heritage - A Genealogy of One Branch of the Hutton Family.38 Mr. Ball concluded that John Hutton, son of Edward Hutton and Frances Hayter, left Virginia and settled in the general area of Gasconade Co., Missouri. I would agree with this conclusion. However Mr. Ball also concluded that this John Hutton married Catherine Philips - a conclusion with which I disagree.

Mr. Ball thoughtfully provided details of his analysis. He concluded John, son of Edward, married Catherine Philips by process of elimination (see details below). This explanation was very helpful as it assures us no Bible or other direct evidence was located. It also tells us Mr. Ball was not aware of all 4 John Huttons in early Washington County who could have married Catherine Philips, or of the 1815 Wythe Co. marriage record of John Hutton to Elizabeth McDaniel (Wythe Co. and Washington Co. were adjacent counties in 1815).

Mr. Ball's conclusion has been accepted without further analysis for many years and populates many online trees. But an exhaustive search found no evidence of a Catherine Hutton associated with a John Hutton in Missouri in the appropriate timeframe. There is evidence of an Elizabeth Hutton married to a John Hutton - living in Franklin Co., Missouri in 1835 (Franklin Co. is adjacent to Gasconade Co). Mr. Ball identified, among John Hutton's children who settled in Missouri: Edward, Amon, John Milton and Columbus. Columbus was the name of Elizabeth McDaniel's father. Amon and John Milton appear as given names among other descendants of Columbus McDaniel.

Mr. Ball was a dedicated family historian who contributed greatly to the preservation of Hutton history; I firmly believe we honor his memory by re-evaluating John's marriage in light of this additional information. I also believe Mr. Ball would want us to do so. dp

Discussion:

There are several errors in the manuscript on page 1 and page 2 that are not part of this discussion. Also, some versions of Pioneer Heritage incorrectly state that John Hutton, husband of Jane Dixon, and father of Edward Hutton, was the son of John Strangeway Hutton.

Page 2 and 3:

The manuscript identifies two John Huttons as likely grandsons of John Hutton and Jane Dixon: John, son of Edward and Frances Hayter, and John, son of John Hutton and Mary Ann Cunningham Hutton. Mr. Ball refers to these as John-1 and John-2, respectively.

Mr. Ball concludes: “The marriage records in Washington County, Virginia, reveal that a John Hutton married Catherine Philips Dec. 11, 1817. It is reasonable to believe this is John No. 1. This for the reason that John No. 2 had a wife by the name of Susanna as was stated in the will of Mary Ann Hutton.”

Discussion:

1. There were two additional John Huttons of similar age, and several additional marriages not included in the analysis, making it impossible to accurately conclude that if person #2 didn’t marry A, then person #1 must have.

2. Mary Ann (Cunningham) Hutton’s will does not state that Susanna was the wife of Mary Ann’s son John Hutton. It states that Susanna Hutton was Mary Ann’s daughter, and that Susanna was married to John Hutton. John and Mary Ann (Cunningham) Hutton’s daughter Susanna married her first cousin, John Hutton, son of James Hutton and Isabel Orr, in 1822. Mary Ann (Cunningham) Hutton had both a son John Hutton and a son-in-law John Hutton.

John Hutton, son of John and Mary Ann (Cunningham) Hutton married #1Rebecca Evitt and #2 Ann Jane Scott. (See Part I).

Page 15 and 21:

The manuscipt also states:

“The 1860 census record of John Milton Hutton’s family in St. Clair County, MO substantiates our belief that we have the proper John Hutton from Washington County, Virginia. This for the reason the census shows that John Milton Hutton named his first daughter after his mother whose maiden name was Catherine Philips. His [John Milton Hutton’s] sixth child, but first daughter, was Catherine.”

Later on page 21, the manuscript states: “She [Catherine Hutton] was born in 1853 and died in 1896, from grave stone records at Osceloa, MO. It is reported she married a Mr. Ramsour.”

Discussion:

John Milton Hutton probably did name his first daughter after his mother. However the headstone in question actually reads: Elizabeth C. Ramsowr [sic] 1853-1896. Her full name appears to have been Elizabeth Catherine. Delilah (Walker) Hutton’s mother is reported to have been Katherine/Catherine, suggesting that when John Milton and Delilah finally had a daughter after 5 sons, they named her after both of their mothers.
