John Hutton1
b. circa 1791, d. 17 January 1854
Father | Leonard Hutton1,2 b. abt 1773, d. 20 Sep 1863 |
Mother | Martha McCall |
BirthCirca | circa 1791 | John Hutton was born circa 1791, probably in Washington County, Virginia.2 |
Marriage | 11 Dec 1817 | He married Catherine Philips on 11 Dec 1817 in Washington County.3 |
Cens-1820 | 1820 | There are two census entries that may represent John and Catherine in 1820. One was in Washington County and the other in neighboring Wythe County. The Wythe Co. entry included a male age 16-25, two females 16-25 and a male under ten. The Washington Co. entry included a 16-25 year old male and a 16-25 year old female. It is possible John and Catherine were enumerated twice as the 1830 census took a year to complete. The additional female and child in the Wythe Co. entry may have indicated a widowed sister and child.4,5,6 |
1821 | In late 1820 John's father, Leonard Hutton, sold his land in Washington County. He then moved his family east into Wythe County. When Smyth Co. was created in 1832 from the eastern end of Washington Co. and the western end of Wythe Co., Leonard's land fell in the newly created county. John and Catherine may have made the move with John's father or they may have moved earlier.
Land-Buy | 20 Sep 1821 | On 20 Sep 1821 John purchased 3/8ths of an acre on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River in Wythe Co. from Thompson Atkins. John paid $70 for the land which was described as the 5th lot on the south side of the street. John was a resident of Wythe County when he made the purchase.7 |
Land-Buy | 6 Sep 1822 | The following year, on Sept. 6, 1822, John purchased the 3rd lot on the south side of the street from Robert Crow for $48.8 |
These lots were probably part of a town known as Leggatsville which existed for a time in that part of Wythe County which became Smyth County. The town sat just east of present day Marion near where Snider Branch flows into the Middle Fork of the Holston River. The town probably sat on the south side of the river.9
11 Jun 1824 | Leonard Hutton, [John's father], purchased lots 7, 8 and 9 on the south side of the street in June 1824.10
Land-Sell | 11 Jan 1825 | John and Catherine do not appear to have lived on this land for long. On Jan. 11th, 1825 they sold both lots to Daniel Hoofnagle. The deeds noted that John and Catherine lived in Washington County.11,12 |
Land-Buy | 18 Dec 1825 | Later that year, on Dec. 18th, 1825 Stephen and Margaret Wheeler sold John Hutton and Catherine, his wife, 81 acres in Washington County, Virginia on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River for $425.13 |
This did not indicate that they had moved back to present day Washington County. It is likely they had settled in that part of eastern Washington County which became western Smyth County in 1832.
Cens-1830 | 1830 | John was enumerated as the head of a Washington Co. household in 1830. The enumeration included two individuals; a 30-39 year old male and a 30-39 year old female.14 |
Marriage | 30 Nov 1842 | He married second Mary Wortham on 30 Nov 1842 in Smyth County, Virginia.15 |
Mary was probably a widow. She appears in many records by the nickname "Polly" and her first married surname appears as Waltham, Wertham, Wortham, etc.
Land-Sell | In June 1843 John and Mary sold Thomas J. Myers 4 acres of the land John and Catherine purchased in 1825. The following January they sold Myers an additional 8 1/4 acres for $53. Then on May 23, 1844 John and Mary sold Thomas Myers the remaining 67 1/2 acres for $506.25. That deed described the land as the same tract Stephen Wheeler and wife sold to said John Hutton on 15 [18] Dec. 1825.16,17,18
Land-Buy | 10 Jun 1845 | The following year, on June 10, 1845, John purchased 21+ acres on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River in Smyth Co. from Gracy Handy, and Willaby and Elizabeth Quessenberry.19 |
Land-Sell | 18 Nov 1845 | John and Mary only owned the land for about 5 months. On Nov. 18th, 1845 they sold the same parcel to Willaby Quessenberry and Charles Blackard for $120.20 |
Cens-1850 | 1850 | In 1850 John and Mary do not appear to have lived together. John, at age 60, was enumerated living by himself surrounded by other descendants of Leonard Hutton. John was employed as a blacksmith. Mary was enumerated 3 households away. Her household included 21 year old Mary Waltham.21,22 |
Death | 17 Jan 1854 | John drowned on 17 Jan 1854 in Smyth County.23 |
