MotherElizabeth McDaniel
Birthbetween 1815 and 1818  According to his headstone, Edward Hutton was born 13 Aug 1815, however his age on all census records suggests he was born a year or two later. Edward was born in Virginia, probably in Washington County.1,3,4,5,6
He was the eldest of his parent's children and was named for his paternal grandfather.
Migration  Edward spent the majority of his youth living in Virginia where his father's family owned large tracts of land on a creek that still carries the family name. In the mid 1830s Edward's parents left Virginia and migrated to Missouri where John Hutton patented land in Franklin County and neighboring Gasconade County.
Land-Patent10 Apr 1843  In 1843 Edward patented 40 acres himself in Osage County (created from Gasconade Co. in 1841). It was a cash entry sale.7
Land-Mortg2 Dec 1843  Later that year Edward mortgaged the land to Thomas Baker for $222.88.8
Marriage16 Mar 1849 Edward Hutton married Nancy Elizabeth Maxwell, daughter of Calvin Maxwell and Susannah Emaline Hawkins, on 16 Mar 1849 in Osage County, Missouri.9
The marriage entry recorded Nancy's surname as Smith, however her death certificate and Calvin Maxwell's family Bible confirm her maiden name as Maxwell. No prior marriage to a Smith has been identified for her to date.10,11
Edward was 12 to 15 years older than Nancy. His younger brother Amon had married Nancy's sister Mary Maxwell in 1843.
Cens-185016 Oct 1850  Edward and Nancy settled on land in Osage County where they were enumerated in 1850 with 1 year old William. Amon and Mary Hutton were recorded as the adjacent household.3
Land-Sell22 May 1856 On 22 May 1856 Edward and Nancy sold 4 parcels (totaling 160 acres) of land in Osage County to George W. Boyse for $600. Three of the parcels were patent land, including 80 acres Edward had acquired the previous March.12,13,14
Cens-186030 Jul 1860  Following the sale of their Osage County land, Edward and Nancy moved further west, settling in St. Clair County. By July 1860 Edward, age 43, owned land valued at $750 and personal property worth $300. Nancy was 29. Four children were recorded with them: William T. (11), Bernetta J. (6), Joseph W. (4) and John C. (1).4
Edward's immediate neighbors in Polk township included Amon Hutton [his brother] and Calvin Maxwell [his father-in-law]. Sarah Hawkins [his widowed sister] lived a few households away.15,16,17
Cens-187016 Jul 1870  Four more children (Mary, Benjamin, Nancy Elizabeth and Ellenor) were added to the family between 1860 and 1870. Edward's land holdings increased in value to $1,600 and his personal property to $619.5
Cens-188024 Jun 1880  The 1880 census enumeration collected additional information not asked in previous years. In particular Edward's entry noted that not only was he born in Virginia, but both of his parents were as well. Nancy's entry stated that both she and her parents were born in Tennessee.6
Death13 Feb 1898 Edward died on 13 Feb 1898.1
Burial He was buried at Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery in St. Clair County, Missouri.1

Research Comment:

A family history lists an additional son named James with dates of 1861-1890 however the source of the data is not clear. James was not enumerated with the family in either 1870 or 1880. Nancy has not been located on the 1900 or 1910 census so the total number of children born to her is not known.18
For many years Edward's father was thought to have married Catherine Philips, however new research reveals that not to be the case. For more information read an analysis of the John Hutton Marriages.

At the time the Bible was transcribed it was in possession of Mrs. A.C. Vache of Marshall, Missouri. Many of the events listed took place prior to 1866, suggesting the information was copied into this Bible from an earlier record.
