Birthbetween 1795 and 1800 John Hutton was born between 1795 and 1800, probably in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
Marr Bond12 Sep 1815 He and Elizabeth McDaniel, daughter of Columbus McDaniel, were issued a marriage bond on 12 Sep 1815 in Wythe County, Virginia. Absalom McDaniel was the bondsman.5
Oct 1818  Three years after their marriage, John reached an agreement with Elizabeth's widowed father, whereby the young couple agreed to move from Washington County to Wythe County and live with Columbus. John rented part of Columbus' land for one year, for which he was to pay the older man 1/3 of the grain raised on the land. John also agreed to purchase 66 acres of land which included an old mill. The acreage adjoined the tract on which Columbus lived and was situated on the waters of the North Fork of the Holston River. John was to pay $400 for the land at the end of 7 years. John moved to the rented land in October 1818 and began repairing the mill. His family joined him the following month.6,7
However towards the end of the rental year either Columbus McDaniel or the Huttons decided the arrangement was not working as hoped. John decided to move his family back to Washington County. He and Columbus agreed to cancel John's purchase of the 66 acres. John felt that Columbus owed him for the improvements John had made to the mill, but Columbus disagreed, stating that he would not have use of the mill.6
John and Elizabeth had a daughter Sally while they lived in Wythe County.8
Cens-18201820  The family was enumerated back in Washington Co. when the 1820 census was taken. John's household included 2 males 0-9 [Amon & Edward]; 1 male 16-25 [John]; 1 female 0-9 [Sarah]; 1 female 26-44 [Elizabeth].3
Court Record  Columbus McDaniel died in Aug. 1821. His will left John Hutton a share of his estate, along with Tary Wolf (late Tary Bishop), Robert McReynolds, Martin Benham, Solomon McDaniel, Absolom McDaniel and John Marshall's heirs. Columbus named his son Solomon as his executor. In 1823 John Hutton filed suit in Wythe Co. Chancery Court against Solomon McDaniel as executor of his father's estate. John believed the estate owned him $169.98 for expenses associated with rebuilding the mill. Eventually the men agreed to allow 3 impartial citizens to settle the case. They decided Solomon McDaniel owned John Hutton $80 from the estate of Columbus McDaniel.9,10,11,12
Residence24 Sep 1820  In Sept. 1820, not long after the census enumeration and not long after John brought his family back to Washington County, John's father Edward Hutton purchased 153 acres from James and Esther Beattie. The land encompassed much of present day Glade Spring, not far from the land owned by various Hutton family members, including Edward, on Hutton Creek. John and his family apparently lived on the 153 acre tract. In Oct. 1830 Edward Hutton sold the property. The deed specifically stated that Edward's son John Hutton lived on the land.13,14
Cens-18301830  As expected John was recorded as the head of a Washington Co. household in 1830. In fact the census taker noted his entry as "John Hutton, son of Edward". The household included: 2 males 5-9 [John Milton + ?]; 2 males 10-14 [Amon & Edward]; 1 male 30-39 [John]; 3 females under 5 [Frances, Nancy + ?]; 1 female 5-9 [Sarah]; 1 female 30-39.4 [Elizabeth]
Migration  At some point in the next few years John and Elizabeth left Virginia for Missouri.
Land-Grant9 Sep 1835  On September 9, 1835 John was issued a grant for slightly over 41 acres in Franklin County, Missouri. The parcel included the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 15, township 42 north of range 2 east.15
Land-Sell16 Nov 1835  John and Elizabeth sold the same parcel of land two months later for $150. John and "Elizabeth, his wife" both signed the deed.16
Land-Buy24 Sep 1837 On 24 Sep 1837 John bought the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 20 in township 41 north of range seven in Gasconade County, Missouri, from James Galloway. The tract contained a little over 41 acres.17
At the time of the purchase the land was in Gasconade County, however when Osage County was formed from Gasconade in 1841 it fell in the new county.
Heir30 Jul 1839  John's father died in 1839 in Virginia. His will left John $1.00, noting that he had already received all that Edward intended for him to receive.1
Cens-18401840  John was enumerated in Gasconade County in 1840. The makeup of his household suggested Elizabeth was deceased. The household included 1 male 10-14[Columbus]; 2 males 15-19 [John Milton + ?]; 2 males 20-29 [Amon and Edward]; 1 male 40-49 [John]; 2 females 10-14.18 [Frances and Nancy]
Land-Grant1 Oct 1840 On 1 Oct 1840 John bought 41 acres from the US Land Office at St. Louis. The parcel (the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 20) was adjacent to the land John purchased in 1837.19
Land-Sell24 Aug 1841  John sold both parcels on Aug. 24, 1841 for $300. Elizabeth was not mentioned on the deed suggesting again that she was deceased.20
The land John sold in 1841, which was in Gasconade Co. and then Osage Co., fell into the northeast corner of Maries County when it was created from Osage and Pulaski Counties in 1855.
Deathbefore 1850 John probably died before 1850 as he has not been located on that year's census.

Research Comment:

For many years it has been thought that John, son of Edward Hutton, married Catherine Philips. New research reveals that he married Elizabeth McDaniel, and that John, son of Leonard Hutton, married Catherine Philips.

This research is presented and analyzed here: John Hutton Marriages.
There is little direct evidence to prove the names of John and Elizabeth's children. Their 1820 census entry suggests they had 2 sons and a daughter born before the summer of 1820. The 1830 census suggests two additional sons were born between about 1820 and 1825 and 3 additional daughters between 1825 and 1830. One additional male was born after 1830. One of the females born between 1825 and 1830 does not appear in 1840.

The two oldest sons are thought to be Amon and Edward. Dr. Vardary Amon Hutton (1866-) left an autobiography identifying his grandfather as Amon Hutton, and Amon's father as John Hutton. The apparent daughter born before 1820 can be identified as the Sally Hutton who was referenced in the Wythe Co. Chancery Court case mentioned in the top part of this page. She appears to have been the Sarah Hutton who married Augustin Hawkins in late 1834 in Gasconade County, Missouri. Forty-two year old Sarah Hawkins (b. VA) was enumerated in St. Clair County, MO in 1860 with several children, including an apparent son John. She lived very close to Edward and Amon Hutton.

One of the sons born between 1820 and 1825 was John Milton Hutton, identified as a son of John Hutton by his great grandson, Roy Ball in his 1960 manuscript on the Hutton family. Mr. Ball also stated that John Milton Hutton was known to have had brothers Edward, Amon and Columbus. Edward appears to have been the first born and was no doubt named for his paternal grandfather. The name Amon was associated with the McDaniel family. Columbus was born about 1831, no doubt named for his maternal grandfather. All four men, Amon, Edward, John M., and Columbus acquired BLM patent land on April 10th, 1843.

This leaves the possibility of another son born between 1820 and 1825. Mr. Ball stated there may have been a son Andrew, but does not provide a source. A William E. Hutton and a Joseph Hutton acquired land on the same day as the 4 men above. William E. Hutton was enumerated in Franklin Co. in 1850. He was born about 1798 in Kentucky; another household was headed by a Samuel Hutton born about 1798 in Kentucky. Joseph Hutton may have been the Joseph Hatton enumerated in Johnson Co., Missouri in 1850. He was born abt 1799 in Kentucky. One person who might be a candidate for John's additional son was an Abraham Hutton who sold a horse and wagon to one Jacob Fisher in Osage Co., MO in 1848.

Mr. Ball stated that John Milton Hutton had a sister Nancy who married Andrew Branson. Osage Co. Marriage records contain an entry for a Nancy Hutton and Andrew Branson who married in 1845. Columbus Hutton lived with Nancy and Andrew in 1850. Nancy was born about 1827 in Virginia. Another of the 3 apparent daughters born between 1825 and 1830 was probably Frances S. Hutton who married Madison Branson in 1842 in Osage County. She was born about 1825 in Virginia. Although there is no proof that Frances Hutton was John's daughter it seems likely given that his mother's name was Frances.

That may still leave 1 missing daughter although the 1840 household only included 2 females and both Nancy and Frances married after 1840. Mr. Ball felt John had a daughter Elizabeth who married a James Mundson. I was not able to locate a marriage for this couple however an Elizabeth Land married a James M. Mundane in 1848 in Osage County. They were enumerated adjacent to Andrew and Nancy (Hutton) Branson in Osage Co. in 1850. Elizabeth was born around 1827 in Virginia.

Only one of these possible children is known to have lived long enough to necessitate a state registration at their death. John M. Hutton died in 1910 in Missouri. Unfortunately the entry for his parents reads: "Unable to obtain". The entry for John's place of birth reads: Washburn Co., WV. There is no place of that name in West Virginia and it is probably safe to assume the informant meant Washington Co., Virginia

The agreement also bears the signature of Edward Hutton [John's father], which matches an earlier sample of Edward's signature (see his page). Edward Hutton, father of John, was the only Edward Hutton in Washington or Wythe Co. who was of age in 182312
John and Elizabeth migrated from Virginia to Missouri with their children. They initially owned land in Franklin County. See the Missouri map (also accessible via the Misc. Locations link in the menu bar at the top of any page).
They later lived in Gasconade County, Missouri.

Doty, 41 43/100 acres on the waters of Caby Creek, described as the SE qtr of the NE qtr of Section 15 in township 42N of Range 2E). The clerk also noted that John and Elizabeth acknowledged the deed (and Elizabeth released her interest) on 16 Nov. 1833. However, the deed was recorded on 16 Nov. 1835. The previous deed on page 368 was acknowledged on 12 Nov. 1835 and recorded on 16 Nov. 1835. Since John did not receive the final patent for this property until Sept. 1835 it seems unlikely he sold it in Nov. 1833. It is more likely the clerk erred in copying the year of the sale into the deed register, especially in light of the fact that the date and month were otherwise accurate.
