Birth15 Aug 1819 Sarah Bernette Hutton was probably born on 15 Aug 1819, and probably in Wythe County, Virginia. In 1883 Sarah's birthdate was submitted to the records of the Mormon church, probably by her son William. The date entered was 15 Aug. 1818. However the dates of birth for both Sarah and her brothers Edward and Amon are clouded by inconsistencies. A record created only a few years after Sarah's birth suggests she was born in 1819, not 1818.1,2
Sarah's father moved his family from Washington Co. to Wythe county in late 1818 to live with Sarah's paternal grandfather, Columbus McDaniel. However the arrangement did not work out and the following year the various parties decided to dissolve the agreement. Disagreements arose over whether Columbus McDaniel should pay for improvements John Hutton had made to a mill on the property. Columbus died in 1821 and John Hutton sued Solomon McDaniel as executor of his father's estate. A deposition taken in Feb. 1823 addressing conversations between John Hutton and Columbus McDaniel over monies John Hutton felt were owed him included these statements:

Question from Solomon McDaniel to Mr. Graham: State what that conversation was and at what time.
Answer: ... I think it was in the forepart of the fall 1819.
Question: Was it before or after the time Betsy Bishop stayed with Mrs. Hutton when her daughter Sally was born?
Answer: I think it was after that time.3

Childhood  John Hutton returned his family to Washington County in late 1819 or early 1820. The family then lived on land John's father purchased from James Beattie in the fall of that year. The land now encompasses much of present day Glade Spring, Virginia.4,5
Migration  Sarah's parents moved to Missouri in the early 1830s where John Hutton acquired land in Franklin County and neighboring Gasconade County.
Marriage7 Aug 1834 She married Augustine Hawkins on 7 Aug 1834 in Gasconade County, Missouri.6
Cens-18401840  In 1840 Augustine was enumerated as the head of a household that included 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-29 and 1 female 20-29. Calvin Maxwell [two of his daughters married 2 of Sarah's brothers] was enumerated two lines away. John Hutton [Sarah's father] was also nearby.7
Widowed18 Mar 1856  Augustine died on 18 Mar 1856.8
Cens-186027 Jul 1860  In the late 1850s several members of Sarah's family moved from Osage Co., Missouri to St. Clair County. Sarah appears to have accompanied them. Her 1860 enumeration lists her as head of a household that included John J. (20), E.C. (female, 17), W.W. (male, 11), P.C. (female, 11) and B.J. (male, 7). Sarah's occupation was listed as "farmer"; she owned personal property worth $100. Edward Hutton and Amon Hutton [both her brothers] lived a few households away.9
Death9 Mar 1863 Sarah died on 9 Mar 1863 at age 43.1
13 Jun 1870  Following Sarah's death her oldest son John J. and his family lived adjacent to Sarah's brother Amon and his family in St. Clair County. Sarah's daughter Elizabeth, who had married Albert Penny, lived in Hickory County. The couple's 1870 census household included 17 year old Bernetta Hawkins.10,11
Sarah's son William joined the Mormon Church. An interesting biography of his life is posted on his Find-a-Grave page.12

Research Comment:

Sarah's father is stated to have married Catherine Philips in many online trees, however new research leads to a different conclusion. It also sheds light on how Sarah was linked as a child of John and Elizabeth. For more information read an analysis of the John Hutton Marriages.

Sarah's paternal grandfather, Edward Hutton, purchased a tract of land in Washington Co., Virginia in 1820. Sarah probably grew up on this land. See the Hutton Land Locations page and locate the "brown" tract. The page also contains a link to additional information on the land on Hutton Creek settled by Sarah's great grandfather, John Hutton.

The complaint states that John Hutton, in Oct. 1818, while residing in Washington County, Virginia rented a part of Columbus McDaniel's plantation in Wythe Co. for 1 year. Columbus then lived with John Hutton and his family on the land. Toward the end of the year, according to John Hutton, Columbus became dissatisfied with the arrangement. And at the end of the year Hutton moved back to Washington County. [The lawsuit itself arose from improvements John Hutton made on a second parcel of land which he had agreed to purchase from Columbus. That agreement was cancelled however John felt his father-in-law owed him for the improvements]
