MotherElizabeth McDaniel
Birth1 Nov 1817 Amon McDonald Hutton is reported to have been born on 1 Nov 1817 in Virginia. His age on census records (1850: 30; 1860: 42; 1870: 52; 1880: 62; 1900: 82) is generally consistent with a Nov. 1817 date of birth with the exception of the 1850 census, which was created closest to his year of birth.4,5,6,7,8
Childhood  Amon was probably born in Washington County. His parents spent a short time in late 1818 and 1819 residing in Wythe Co., Virginia with Amon's maternal grandfather, Columbus McDaniel. The McDaniel name alternately appears in county records as McDonald, the spelling used by later generations. Amon himself was probably named for Amon McDaniel/McDonald who served as constable in Wythe County in 1808 and who appears in other records associated with the family of Columbus McDaniel during the same timeframe.9,10,11
Migration  In the early 1830s Amon's parents left Virginia and migrated to Missouri where John Hutton patented a tract of land in Franklin County in 1835. John and Elizabeth sold the land a few months later and John then purchased another tract in neighboring Gasconade County. That parcel became part of Osage County in 1841.12,13,14
Land-Buy22 Feb 1842  Amon himself purchased land in Osage County on 22 Feb 1842. That parcel was described as the SW quarter of the SW quarter of Section 2 in Township 42 North of Range 8W.15
Land-Patent10 Apr 1843  The following spring Amon patented an additional 40 acres in the same township.16
Marriage5 Nov 1843 He married Mary Adeline Maxwell, daughter of Calvin Maxwell and Susannah Emaline Hawkins, on 5 Nov 1843 in Gasconade County, Missouri.17
Mary's sister Nancy Elizabeth (Maxwell) Smith married Amon's brother Edward a few years later.
Land-Mortg2 Dec 1843  Shortly after their marriage Amon mortgaged both tracts of land to Thomas Baker of Osage Co. for $101.80. Amon satisfied the terms of the mortgage on Jan. 4, 1849.18
Land-Sell4 Jan 1849  Amon and "Mary Adaline, his wife" then sold both parcels to Andrew Brittingham for $250. Both Amon and Adaline signed the deeds with their mark.19
Cens-185016 Oct 1850  Amon and Mary were enumerated the following year when the first census to record the names of all members of a household was taken. The household included Amon, Mary, John (3), Martha (1) and Mary (5).7
Five year old Mary Hutton living with Amon and Mary in 1850 has not been identified. She was enumerated after their known children, and does not appear in their 1860 household. Was she the daughter of another family member?
Land-Patentbetween 1852 and 1859  Amon patented several tracts of land between 1850 and 1860. In 1852 he patented 40 acres in Section 24 of Township 44N in Osage County and in 1857 he patented an additional 120 acres in Section 24.20,21
Migration  In the late 1850s the family moved further west, settling in St. Clair County. There Amon patented land in the summer and fall of 1859. These parcels, 40 acres each, were both in Section 34 of Township 37.22,23
Cens-186030 Jul 1860  Amon and Mary were enumerated in Polk Township in St. Clair County in 1860. The household also included John J. (14), Martha A. (11), Jeremiah (9), Sarah J. (7), M.F. [Mary F.] (5), N.A. [Nancy A.] (2) and Mark, 6/12. Amon (enumerated as A.M.C. Hutton) owned land worth $1,000 and personal property valued at $350.8
Other members of the extended Hutton family also made the move to St. Clair County as Amon's neighbors included Edward Hutton [his brother], Calvin Maxwell [his father-in-law] and Sarah Hawkins. [his widowed sister]
Cens-187016 Aug 1870  Four additional sons were added to the family between 1860 and 1870 including twins Arthur and Austin (Arthur was enumerated as Esther in 1870). Amon and Mary may have also changed their residence as they were recorded in Washington township.24
The adjacent household was headed by John Hawkins.25 [the son of Amon's deceased sister Sarah Hutton Hawkins]
Amon and Mary's son John suffered from exposure following the Civil War and became increasingly unable to care for his wife and children. Amon moved John and his family to his own farm where he built them a log house. John died there in 1872.26
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  By June 1880 Amon and Mary had moved again, this time leaving Missouri and settling in Linn County, Kansas. Only 5 children were enumerated with them in 1880: Jeremiah (27), Mark (20), "Andy" (16), and 12 year old twins Arthur and Austin. Amon's entry indicated that he and both of his parents were born in Virginia. Mary's entry stated that she and her parents were born in Tennessee.27
Cens-State1885  Mary apparently died between June 1880 and 1885 as the Kansas State Census for 1885 lists Amon as widowed. Mark, Austin and Arthur were recorded with him.28
Cens-State1895  By 1895 Austin had married. His 1895 state enumeration listed him as the head of a household in Cowley Co., Kansas which included 77 year old Amon Hutton, b. "West Virginia."29
Cens-190020 Jun 1900  And in 1900 Amon made his home with his daughter Sarah J. Kinsey. Sarah and her husband Solomon lived in Elk County, Kansas, with their 7 children. The census noted that Amon could not read or write.30
Death22 Aug 1903 Amon died on 22 Aug 1903 in Kirk, Yuma County, Colorado, at age 85.5
Burial He was buried at Kirk Cemetery in Yuma County, Colorado.5

Research Comment:

Amon's father was long thought to have married Catherine Philips, however new research reveals that not to be accurate. For more information read an analysis of the John Hutton Marriages.

Amon's grandfather, Edward Hutton, purchased a tract of land in Washington Co., Virginia in 1820. Amon probably grew up on this land. To see it's locaton see the Hutton Land Locations page and locate the "brown" tract. Amon McDaniel witnessed a deed dated 12 Oct. 1810 whereby William and Margaret Orr of Wythe County sold 130 acres of land on the waters of the North Fork of the Holston River in Wythe Co. to Solomon McDaniel. [Solomon McDaniel was the son of Columbus McDaniel]
  11. [S2933] Mary Peterson, "Hutton-McDaniel Connection," e-mail to D. Powell, 11 Feb. 2012. Mrs. Peterson notes that there is a 1939 family history of the family by Ray Hurlburt which says, "Columbus is said to have had 2 or 3 sons. I was told that one was Amon, but it may have been Absolom, as Mrs. Nan Gaddy told me there was a son, Absolom, and I think he drowned leaving no family." Further research establishes that Absolom McDaniel was named in Columbus McDaniel's will and though he died fairly young he left heirs. Therefore it is possible the son who died young without heirs was Amon.

  13. [S2895] Franklin Co., Missouri Deed Book B: 368-9. The deed, as copied into the Franklin Co. deed book, dated the sale as 16 Nov. 1833 (John Hutton and Elizabeth, his wife, of Franklin Co., MO, for $150, sell to Larkin R. Doty, 41 43/100 acres on the waters of Caby Creek, described as the SE qtr of the NE qtr of Section 15 in township 42N of Range 2E). The clerk also noted that John and Elizabeth acknowledged the deed (and Elizabeth released her interest) on 16 Nov. 1833. However, the deed was recorded on 16 Nov. 1835. The previous deed on page 368 was acknowledged on 12 Nov. 1835 and recorded on 16 Nov. 1835. Since John did not receive the final patent for this property until Sept. 1835 it seems unlikely he sold it in Nov. 1833. It is more likely the clerk erred in copying the year of the sale into the deed register, especially in light of the fact that the date and month were otherwise accurate.

However line 17 lists place of birth as VA and previous residence as Missouri. Line 17 on page 35 is for a 6 year old child in the previous household. No other members of that family were born in VA. It is likely the enumerator's entry for Amon's birth and residence data was one line off and should have been VA/Missouri.
