Birth26 Apr 1822 John Milton Hutton was born on 26 Apr 1822, probably in Washington County, Virginia. John's death certificate lists his place of birth as "Washburn Co. W.V.". West Virginia did not exist in 1822; neither is there a "Washburn" Co. in either Virginia or W. Virginia.2,3
Migration  John spent the early years of his youth living near Hutton Creek in Washington County where many members of his father's family owned land. In the early 1830s the family left Virginia and settled in Missouri. John's father bought land in Franklin County and then in Gasconade County. John's mother appears to have died before 1840 as she is not indicated on that year's census household.4
Land-Patent10 Apr 1843  On 10 Apr 1843 several members of the Hutton family received land patents from the Land Office at St. Louis. John M. Hutton acquired the NW quarter of the southwest quarter of section 36 in township 44 North. The land was in present day Franklin County. Amon, Edward and Columbus Hutton [John's brothers] all acquired land the same day in Osage Co. A Joseph G. Hutton and a William E. Hutton patented land in Franklin Co. on April 10, 1843 as well.5
Marriage He married Delilah Walker.6
Cens-185012 Sep 1850  The couple were enumerated in Osage County (formed from Gasconade in 1842) in the early fall of 1850. John was 27; Delilah was 24. Four children were also recorded: William (6), Benjamin (4), Columbus (3) and Andrew (5/12).6
Land-Patent10 Oct 1853  John patented an additional 40 acres in Osage County in Oct. 1853.7
Land-Sell11 Jan 1854  John and Delila only kept this land a few months. On Jan. 11, 1854 they sold it to Andrew Branson for $53.75.8 [Andrew was married to John's sister Nancy]
Migration  John and Delilah then joined John's siblings Edward Hutton, Amon Hutton and Sarah Hawkins and moved to St. Clair County, Missouri.
Cens-186031 Jul 1860  John and Delilah settled in Washington township where they were enumerated in the summer of 1860. John owned land worth $700 and personal property valued at $500. The household also included: William J. (16), John B. (14), Jefferson (12), Andrew (10), Edward (9), Catherine (7), Fanny J. (5) and Margaret A. (2).9
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  Although John and Delilah were again enumerated in St. Clair County in 1880, the specific location had changed to Doyal township. The 1880 census identified the relationship of the members of the household to the head of the household. Margaret A. (22) and Sarah E. (18) were listed as John's daughters. Amon (16), Robert S. (14) and James (11) were identified as John's sons. It was noted that Robert had one eye. The census also noted that neither John or Delila could read or write.10
Cens-19006 Jun 1900  The turn of the century found John and Delilah in Johnson Township. John, at age 77, worked as a livery man. His birthdate was entered as April 1823 which disagrees with other records. Delilah was 75; the couple had been married 56 years. Delilah was listed as the mother of 12 children, 9 of whom were living. The household also included 33 year old Josie Hutton (listed as John's daughter-in-law) and 7 year old Milam Hutton (listed as John's grandson). Although Josie's husband was not part of the household she was noted as married.11
Death22 Feb 1910 John died of a cerebral hemorrhage and Brights Disease on 22 Feb 1910 in Humansville, Polk County, Missouri, at age 87.2,3
Burial He was buried at Humansville Cemetery in Polk County, Missouri.3

Research Comment:

John's mother is listed as Catherine Philips in many online trees, however new research reveals that not to be accurate. For more information read an analysis of the John Hutton Marriages.

John probably grew up on a tract of land his grandfather, Edward Hutton, purchased in Washington Co., Virginia in 1820. To see it's locaton see the Hutton Land Locations page and locate the "brown" tract. The page also contains a link to additional information on the land on Hutton Creek settled by Amon's great grandfather, John Hutton.
