FatherJohn Hutton1 b. abt 5 Dec 1767, d. 8 Nov 1838
MotherMary Ann Cunningham2 b. abt 1772, d. 1 Jan 1849
BirthCircacirca 1809 John Hutton was born in Virginia circa 1809.3
Marriage5 Jan 1837 He married Rebecca Evitt, daughter of William Evitt and Rebecca McNew, on 5 Jan 1837 in Washington County, Virginia.4
Widowed30 Dec 1839  Rebecca died on Dec. 30th, 1839. The couple's daughter Sarah was barely two years old.
Court Record25 Feb 1851  Some years later, on Feb. 25, 1851, John executed a bond stating that on or before the 15th of Dec. 1858 at which time his daughter Sarah Virginia turned 21, he would cause title in a specific tract of land to be transferred to Elisha McNew. The land in question had originally belonged to Elisha McNew, dec'd. An 11th interest had passed to Elisha's daughter Rebecca (McNew) Evitt, who was also deceased. Rebecca's daughter, Rebecca (Evitt) Hutton was one of 5 children. When she died in 1839 her 1/5th interest passed to her daughter Sarah Hutton.5
Devisee30 Apr 1841  John's mother wrote her will in 1841. She had been left possession of the family land on Baker (Hutton Creek) when John Hutton Sr. died in 1838. Mary Ann's will left the land to John and his sister Margaret. They were to divide the land by a north-south line, with John taking the east half. John and Margaret were to care for their sister Jane who was blind.2
Marriage He married second Ann Jane Scott, daughter of Hugh Scott and Jane Orr
Land-Buy  Following their marriage John began the systematic purchase of Jane's siblings interest in 231/232 acres held by their father Hugh at the time of his death. The land sat on the north side of the main stage road about 8 miles west of Abingdon. adjacent to Emory and Henry College and to land owned by William Byars and Pleasant Smith.6,7,8,9,10,11
Cens-18509 Aug 1850  John and "Anney" were enumerated in Washington County in 1850. John was 44 and owned land worth $2,500. Anney was 33. Also present was 12 year old Sarah.12
Land-Sell26 Nov 1851  By 1851 John and Ann were apparently settled on the old Scott land as they sold Arthur Hutton the 78+ acres left to John by his mother. Arthur had acquired a large quantity of the old Hutton land on Baker (Hutton) Creek.13
Children  John and Ann's first child was born shortly after the 1850 census enumeration. They named her Mary Rebecca, possibly after John's mother and his first wife. Mary died in 1855. The couple also had a daughter Amanda and a son Samuel.
Cens-186013 Jul 1860  The 1860 census recorded John at age 51 with Ann (43), Amanda (5) and Samuel (3). Jane Scott, no doubt Ann's mother, lived with them as did 14 year old Scott Crawford.3
Widowed23 Jul 1866  Ann took her own life in July 1866.
Death8 Apr 1868  Less than two years later John also commited suicide. He had been upset for several months about land he had sold to William Edmondson, stating that he (John) was not in his right mind when he sold it. Family members reported that he could not sleep and had not cared for the farm in his usual manner. John hung himself in his stable where he was found by his son Samuel who ran to the home of Mary Smith.14,15,16,17 [Mary Smith, widow of Pleasant Smith, was enumerated as the adjacent household in 1860]

Research Comment:

Following John's death, a Chancery case was filed in Washington County where William R. Johnston was the plaintiff and Samuel O. Hutton was the defendant. The suit was filed to bring about a division of John Hutton's land between John's daughter Sarah who had married William Johnston, and John's son Samuel Hutton. This suggests John and Ann's daughter Amanda was also deceased by that date.

When John Hutton died an Amanda Lynch was living in the home and gave a deposition about John's state of mind. No relationship was stated. I have not been able to learn more about this Amanda but she was clearly not John and Ann's daughter of the same name.18,19
