b. 3 September 1856
Father | John Hutton2,3 b. abt 1809, d. 8 Apr 1868 |
Mother | Ann Jane Scott2,3 d. 23 Jul 1866 |
Birth | 3 Sep 1856 | Samuel Scott Orr Hutton was born on 3 Sep 1856 in Washington County, Virginia.3 |
Childhood | Samuel's childhood must have been difficult. His mother died on July 23rd, 1866, a few hours after shooting herself while Samuel lay sleeping. Not quite two years later, on April 8, 1868, Samuel discovered his father's body hanging in the barn. As was the custom of the day, an inquest was immediately called. Records created that day include a deposition from the young boy and bear his signature.4
Court Record | 6 Apr 1869 | With their father's death, Samuel and his half-sister Sarah inherited his land. Because Samuel was under age a guardian was appointed to represent his interests. As was typical, one heir (in this case William Johnston, representing Sarah, his wife) brought suit against the other heir (Samuel). Joseph T. Campbell was appointed Samuel's guardian ad litem, and 3 men (I. McQuown, A.W. Aston and D.M. Stuart) determined a fair division of the land.5 |
Cens-1870 | 1870 | In 1870 Samuel lived in Abingdon with a Susan Cox who appears to have run a boarding house for young people attending school.6 |
Marriage | He married Sarah Elizabeth Browning in Russell County, Virginia.1
Cens-1880 | 3 Jun 1880 | Samuel and Sarah's first son, John, appears to have been born in Virginia. However in 1880 Samuel and Sarah and 1 year old "J.P" were enumerated farming in Grayson County, Texas.7 |
Widowed | 26 Sep 1882 | The family then moved to Christian County, Missouri, where Sarah died in Sept. 1882. Her obituary was written by Susan Cox of Abingdon, the same person with whom Samuel lived in 1870.1 |
Samuel was probably the Saml I.[S.?] Hutton who married Ella F. Peery on Nov. 15, 1888 in Tazewell Co. Virginia. The marriage entry reported the groom's place of birth as Washington Co., Virginia and the year as 1856; his parents were listed as John and Annie J. Hutton, all of which is consistent with Samuel O. Hutton. The record also indicated that Samuel was widowed. In 1900 Ella was enumerated living with her parents in Tazewell County. She was divorced.8 |

She had been, for some months, partially deranged, but excited no alarm or suspicion of self-destruction. On Monday, the 23d July, after her husband had gone out to his usual labor upon the farm, she shot herself with a musket - the entire load passing through her body - entering immediately under the left breast and passing out under the shoulder blade. she shot herself in the yard, and afterwards crawled into bed where her little son was lying asleep. She lived several hours after the shooting.
