Moth-Death30 Dec 1839  Sarah's mother died on 30 Dec 1839.
Ward25 Jun 1849  Ten years later Sarah's father was named Sarah's guardian in order to represent her interests in the sale of a tract of land. Sarah's mother, Rebecca (Evitt) Hutton was a granddaughter of Elisha McNew and as such inherited a share of his estate.2,1
Marriage8 Jun 1856 Sarah married William R. Johnston on 8 Jun 1856 in Johnson County, Tennessee.3
Cens-186015 Jun 1860  William and Sarah initially lived in Wythe County where William owned land worth $500 and personal property of an equal amount. He was employed as a clerk.4
The 1860s were difficult years for Sarah and her family. Her stepmother took her own life in July 1866, as did her father in April 1868. A younger half sister died during the decade as well.
Court Record  William Johnston initiated a suit following the death of Sarah's father to facilitate the division of John Hutton's land between Sarah and her younger half brother, Samuel.5
Cens-187022 Sep 1870  Perhaps because of this, William and Sarah returned to Washington County to live. They were enumerated in Glade Spring township in 1870 where William at age 39 was employed as a merchant. He owned personal property worth $2,800, no doubt reflecting the inventory of the store. William and Sarah's family had grown to include 6 children. John Johnston, age 76, also lived with them.6
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  However in the late 1870s the family moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee where they again ran a general merchandise store, now with the assistance of their sons Charles and William. Three more sons had been added to the family after 1870.7
