Birth2 Dec 1809 William Henry Hawk was born on 2 Dec 1809 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Childhood William spent his childhood in the vicinity of Abingdon, in Washington County. He attended local schools and learned the trade of house-joiner from his father. William is reported to have been a childhood school-mate and neighbor of Joe Johnston, who later served as a general in the Confederate Army.2 
Marriage10 Nov 1836 He married first Hannah Moffett, daughter of Capt. John Moffett and Isabel Davis, on 10 Nov 1836 in Washington County.1,3 
Land-Gift30 Dec 1837  In 1837 William and Hannah moved to Hancock County, Indiana where Hannah's father gifted them 2 tracts of land.4,5  
  Mary Jane B. (Davis) Moffett (Hannah's sister-in-law) compiled a journal during the 1870s in which she indicated that Hannah and William had 5 children of whom only 3 survived.6 
Widowed30 Oct 1843  Hannah died in October 1843, less than 2 weeks after giving birth to a son. 
Migration1844  The year after Hannah's death William moved to Carroll County, Illinois.5 
Marriage2 Oct 1845 He married second Margaret Edmiston Davis, daughter of William Davis and Sarah Ryburn, on 2 Oct 1845 in Carroll County.7 
  Margaret was the younger sister of Mary Jane Davis and Ann Elizabeth Davis who were married to Hannah (William's first wife)'s brothers. 
Cens-Sum  William and Margaret raised William's 3 sons from his first marriage and added 11 children of their own, 4 of whom died young. William's oldest son, Robert M.A. Hawk, became a US Congressman but died in 1882 while still in office.

William appears to have been a successful farmer, reporting land valued at over $14,000 on the 1860 Carroll County census. The couple lived in Freedom Township not far from Margaret's sisters Mary J.B. Moffett and Ann Elizabeth Moffett.8,9,10,11 
Description William was a man of great energy of character and was distinguished for sound and practical judgment.12 
Death6 Oct 1886 William died as the result of an accident on 6 Oct 1886 at age 76.13,14 
Burial17 Jul 1917 He was buried on 17 Jul 1917 in Lanark Cemetery, Carroll County, Illinois, having been first buried in Wolfe Cemetery. A. G.A.R. marker rests at his grave.13,14 
  William's wife Margaret, his sister Polly and 4 of his children are buried in the same location. Two other children are buried nearby.15
