Birth20 Jun 1841 Thomas M. Hawk was born on 20 Jun 1841 in Hancock County, Indiana.2 
  Thomas was 2 years old when his mother died following the birth of his younger brother. Thomas's father moved to Carroll County, Illinois where he married for a second time. Thomas and his brothers joined their father and stepmother in Carroll County shortly thereafter. 
Military  Thomas joined Co. C. of the 92nd Illinois Infantry on Aug. 6, 1862 at Lanark (Carroll Co.) and was honorably dischared on June 21, 1865. His brother served as lieutenant and later captain of the company. Thomas enrolled as corporal and was later promoted to sergeant.3 
Description  At the time of his enlistment Thomas was described as 5' 10 1/2" tall with light complexion, light hair, and "grey" eyes. 
Marriage25 Oct 1871 He married Laura A. Durrin on 25 Oct 1871 in Whiteside County, Illinois.4 
Cens-18801880  Thomas and Laura farmed land in Salem township in Carroll County. They did not have children.5,3 
17 Mar 1891 On 17 Mar 1891 Thomas and Laura were crossing the railroad tracks in their buggy when they were struck by a passing train. They were thrown over 60 feet. Thomas sustained major injuries and Laura was killed instantly. Two months later (22 May 1891) Thomas applied for a Civil War pension, stating that he was unable to provide for himself.3 
Residence  Following the accident Thomas boarded with several different families in the community of Lanark. However by 1926 he required nursing care. He then went to live with Mrs. Ellen Hawk (his sister-in-law) where he was cared for by his niece, Mrs. Cora Reeves, a practical nurse.6,7,8,3 
Death27 Oct 1931 Thomas died on 27 Oct 1931 in Lanark, Carroll County, Illinois, at age 90.9 
Burial He was buried with his wife Laura at Lanark Cemetery in Carroll County.10
