Childhood He grew up in Carroll County, Illinois, the 9th of 11 children born to his father and mother. Emmett also had 3 half-siblings from his father's first marriage, including a brother, Robert M.A. Hawk who became a U.S. Congressman.3,4 
Marriage13 Jan 1886 He married Verna C. Yeager on 13 Jan 1886 in Carroll County.5 
Cens-190012 Jun 1900  Emmett and Verna settled in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois, where Emmett worked in a dry goods store. They raised 2 sons, although the youngest, Joseph Harold, died at a young age.6 
Death13 Nov 1938 Emmett died on 13 Nov 1938 in Winnebago County at age 77.7,8 
Burial15 Nov 1938 He was buried on 15 Nov 1938 at Lanark Cemetery in Carroll County.1
