Birth17 Oct 1843 John A. Hawk was born on 17 Oct 1843 in Hancock County, Indiana.1 
Moth-Death30 Oct 1843  His mother died less than 2 weeks later leaving John and two older brothers. 
  In 1845 John's father married Margaret E. Davis with whom he added 11 additional children to the family. The family resided in Carroll County, Illinois, where Margaret's mother and siblings lived. Two of Margaret's sisters were married to John's uncles (brothers of John's deceased mother).2,3 
Cens-187028 Jun 1870  John and his future wife Isabella Bateham may have resided in the same neighborhood prior to their marriage. In June 1870 J.A. Hawke (27, b. IN) was enumerated in the household of Catherine Philips in Hickory Grove township, Jasper County, Iowa, whereas a Bell Batham (19, b. IN) was enumerated in the adjacent home of Silas Meiler.4,5 
Marriage He married Isabella Bateham, daughter of George Washington Bateham and Celestia Hoover.1 
Residence John and Isabella spent their married lives in Felix township, Grundy County, Iowa, where they farmed and raised 5 children.6,7 
  John's younger half brother Fountain Hawk also settled in Felix township and was married to Caroline Bateham, Isabella's sister.8 
Death22 Oct 1900 John died of heart disease on 22 Oct 1900 in Felix township, Grundy County, Iowa, at age 57.9,10 
Burial He was buried at Liscomb Cemetery in Marshall County, Iowa.11 
Probate Recd1 Nov 1900 On 1 Nov 1900 Isabella petitioned the Grundy County Court to administer John's estate which included money due on land he had recently sold in Grundy County (SW 1/4 Sect. 29, Township 86, Range 18W). At the time of his death he also owned timberland in Marshall County. His personal assets were estimated at $3,000. The petition also included the names and place of residence of his heirs who were identified as: William (28, Hurrican Lake, N. Dakota); Jess T. (25, Hurricane Lake); Edson F. (20, Conrad, IA); Della G. (17, Conrad) and Jack A. (14, Conrad).12
