Who Were Lilburn Logan Hutton's Parents?

Samuel and Isabella Hutton's 1850 Washington Co., Virginia census household and the 1910 Chancery suit styled Walden et als vs Hutton Admr et als

1850 Washington Co., Virginia census, Household (HH)30: Samuel C. Hutton, 38; Isabella, 43; Lilburn, 21; Nancy E., 19; Mary E., 14; John A. P., 11; Rachel M., 9; James O., 7; Arthur D., 4; Wm. A., 2; Eliza R., 8.1

The 9 children/young adults enumerated with Samuel and Isabella Hutton in 1850 have long been assumed to be their children. Many online trees list Isabella's maiden name as Logan and her given name as "Ibby", however no source for the surname Logan has been provided. It may stem from the fact the eldest child in the household was Lilburn Logan Hutton.

However Rachel M. Hutton (age 9 in 1850) died unmarried on March 5, 1910 causing her heirs to file suit in Chancery Court to facilitate the distribution of her estate.2 The Complaint (see transcription at: Virginia Chancery Records) clarifies that James O[Orr] Hutton, A[Arthur] D. Hutton and J.S. [Samuel J., born 1852] were Rachel's full siblings. Another full sibling, John, was deceased leaving a son Walter. Three children in the 1850 household were not mentioned in the suit: Mary E. married Col. Wm Ryburn in 1890 and died childless in 1892, Nancy probably died bef. 1860, William died in 1888.

The suit also clarified that Rachel had two half-siblings: Lilburn Logan Hutton and S[Sarah] J. Walden, both of whom were deceased by 1910. The suit named their heirs including Rebecca Hutton, a daughter of S.J. Walden. The suit did not state whether Lilburn Hutton and S.J. Walden were related to each other.

  • Margaret Grinstead will: dated 3 March 1888 and recorded 22 Sept. 1890. Margaret, who was Samuel C. Hutton's sister, left her land to Mary Ellen Hutton and Rachel Hutton, "daughters of Samuel C. Hutton dec'd, provided their mother Isabella Hutton shall have a house on and her support from the farm. Rebecca Hutton was also to have a house and her support.8
  • Mary Ellen (Hutton) Ryburn will: dated 5 Feb. 1892 and recorded 22 Feb. 1892 left her interest in the farm on which she lived to her mother; at her mother's death it was to go to Mary Ellen's sister Rachel and niece Eliza R. Hutton during their natural lives.9

Analysis:

The wills of both Samuel and Isabella Hutton named John as their son; John was a full brother to Rachel. The will of Margaret (Hutton) Grinstead named Rachel and Mary Ellen as daughters of both Samuel and Isabella. We know then that Rachel's other full siblings were also the children of Samuel and Isabella Hutton - specifically, children of the Isabella Hutton of household #30 in 1850.

But since Lilburn Hutton and Sarah Jane (Hutton) Walden were Rachel's half-siblings, how were they related to Rachel? Several records establish that Sarah Jane was Isabella Hutton's daughter10 - therefore Sarah Jane and Rachel shared Isabella as their mother, but did not share fathers. But which parent did Lilburn have in common with Rachel?

The Chancery case and the information above suggest two possible scenarios: (for the purposes of this discussion the Isabella listed in household #30 is referred to as Isabella #30).

1. Samuel Hutton and an unknown first wife - possibly also named Isabella, or Elizabeth, and nicknamed Ibby11 - were the parents of Lilburn Logan Hutton (and possibly of Nancy E. Hutton). This first wife's maiden name may have been Logan. In this scenario, Isabella #1 died in the late 1820s or early 1830s, after which Samuel married Isabella #30 who was already the mother of Sarah Jane Hutton.

OR:

2. Lilburn's mother was Isabella #30 but his father was not Samuel. Sarah Jane's 1849 marriage entry to Lewis Walden lists her maiden name as Hutton. Hence, Isabella #30 (who herself was a Hutton at birth; see One Isabella Hutton or Two?) either gave birth to Sarah Jane out of wedlock or had a first marriage to a Hutton, who then died following which she married Samuel Hutton. A similar set of possibilities would apply to Lilburn if his mother was also Isabella #30.

There is considerable support for Scenario #1:
1. Both Lilburn's marriage and death records list his father as Samuel Hutton
2. Lilburn was listed as the first child on the 1850 census. It would have been unusual for him to be listed first if he was Isabella's child and not Samuel's.
3. None of Lilburn's children are mentioned in Isabella #30's will.

Samuel was born abt 1812 and Lilburn was born about 1829 so it is possible he was Lilburn's father. On the other hand, Sarah Jane was born abt 1824, providing additional evidence Samuel was not her father.

Eliza R./Rebecca Hutton:

The Eliza R Hutton listed after all the other children in HH 30 appears to be the same person as the Rebecca Hutton listed as a child of Sarah Jane (Hutton) Walden in the distribution of Rachel Hutton's estate. Rebecca apparently never lived with her mother, at least not after Sarah Jane's marriage to Lewis Walden, as she does not appear with Sarah Jane in any census enumeration. Rebecca was apparently raised by her grandmother Isabella. Eliza R. or Rebecca consistently appeared with Samuel and Isabella in census records but no record includes both an Eliza R. and a Rebecca. Isabella's 1880 household included "Rebecca Hutton, granddaughter"12; she was also described as such in Isabella's will. Note that Rebecca's surname was Hutton - her mother's maiden name. She was born when Sarah Jane Hutton was about 17, some 8 years before Sarah Jane's marriage to Lewis J. Walden.

Summary:

Lilburn Logan Hutton was the son of either the Samuel Hutton or the Isabella Hutton with whom he lived in household #30 in 1850, but not the son of both. Lilburn was a half-sibling to the other children in the household (except Rebecca, who was Isabella's granddaughter, but not Samuel's). It is likely Lilburn was the son of Samuel, but not of Isabella. He may have been the son of Samuel and a previous wife, also named Isabella, possibly Isabella Logan.
