BirthCircacirca Feb 1829 Census records suggest Lilburn Logan Hutton was born in 1829. Two death registers were created for Smyth County, Virginia. One register remained at the courthouse in Smyth Co. and one was later sent to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Richmond. The former lists Lilburn's age at death (in April 1882) as 51 years, 1 month and places his birth in Smyth Co., Virginia. The latter reports his age at death as 53 years, 1 month and lists his place of birth as Washington County.2,3,4,5
Marriage29 Jan 1857 He married Mary Catherine Logan, daughter of Caleb J. Logan and Barbara Jane Howell, on 29 Jan 1857 in Washington County.1
Military6 May 1862 On 6 May 1862 Lilburn enrolled in Co. F. of the 63rd Virginia Infantry. He served through Aug. 1864 or later and appeared on all company muster rolls except during the fall of 1873 when he was noted as sick in the hospital. Newspaper accounts of the day reported that he was slightly wounded in the leg during the fighting at Chickamauga in Sept., 1863.6,7,8
Three of Lilburn's half-brothers, John, James and Arthur, also fought with Company F.
Cens-187029 Aug 1870  Following the war Lilburn and Mary Catherine lived in St. Clair township in in Smyth County, Virginia, where they were enumerated in August 1870 with William J. (10), Nancy R.E. (8), Sarah E.J. (5), Samuel J. (3) and Caleb J. (5/12).3
ChildDeath  Their first child, a daughter recorded in the Washington Co. Birth records only as "J", appears to have died before 1860. And daughter Mary, born in 1859, died from diphtheria in Jan. 1864.
Cens-18804 Jun 1880  The 1880 census for St. Clair District provides additional information about the family. Lilburn (51) was employed as a laborer; he could not read or write. Mary (44) was able to do both. However the 2 oldest children still at home, William (19) and Nannie R. (17) also could not read or write. The younger children, Josie E. (14), Sam J. (12), Caleb J. (10) and Robert (8), all attended school.9
Mary Catherine's 1900 enumeration stated she was the mother of 10 children, 5 of whom were living in 1900. Hence there is an additional child who died young in addition to the names listed below.10
Death10 Apr 1882 Lilburn died on 10 Apr 1882 in Smyth County from inflammation of the brain after he was knocked unconscious when a dead limb fell during a storm and hit him on the head. He also suffered from scrofula.5,4,11[tuberculosis of the lymph glands of the neck]

Research Comment:

Prior to April 2012, I had linked Lilburn Logan Hutton as the son of Samuel and Isabella Hutton. This was based on Lilburn's marriage record and death record, both of which name Samuel as Lilburn's father. His marriage record lists his mother as Isabella whereas Lilburn's death record reports her name as "Ibby" [a nickname commonly used for Elizabeth and occasionally for Isabelle].

However a Washington Co., Virginia Chancery case, filed after the 1910 death of Rachel Hutton, a proven daughter of Samuel and Isabella, named Lilburn as Rachel's half sibling. Hence he was the son of either Samuel or Isabella but not of both. For a detailed discussion subtitled "Who Were Lilburn Logan Hutton's parents" please see Samuel and Isabelle Hutton.1,12
