BirthJan 1841 Rachel M. Hutton was born in Jan 1841 in Virginia.5
Rachel did not marry. She lived with her parents in Washington County, Virginia. By 1860 they probably resided on or near Hutton Creek, on land formerly belonging to Rachel's grandparents John and Mary Ann (Cunningham) Hutton. John Hutton left the land to Mary Ann who divided it between her son John and her daughter Margaret. Margaret's husband died in 1851. In 1860 and 1870 Rachel's family were enumerated adjacent to Margaret however it was Margaret, not Rachel's father Samuel, who was indicated as owning land.
Will3 Mar 1888  Margaret died in 1890. She left her land to Rachel and Rachel's sister Mary Ellen with the stipulation their mother and Rebecca Hutton were to each have a home on the property.6
Devisee5 Feb 1892  Mary Ellen (Hutton) Ryburn died in 1892. Her will left Rachel a life estate in Mary Ellen's interest in the Hutton farm. The life estate was to go into affect following the death of Rachel's mother, Isabella.7
Moth-Death1895  Isabella died in 1895. She left Rachel two beds and other household items. She left similiar items to Rebecca Hutton. Rachel and Rebecca were to divide Isabella's stock after her funeral expenses were paid.
Rachel Hutton and Rebecca [Eliza R.] Hutton were born 10 months apart and are sometimes listed as sisters. They were not. Rachel was the daughter of Samuel and Isabella Hutton. Rebecca was the daughter of Sarah Jane (Hutton) Walden who was Isabella's daughter from a relationship prior to her marriage to Samuel Hutton.8,9
Cens-190014 Jun 1900  However the two women appear to have been close and probably thought of themselves as sisters. They were enumerated as such in 1900. Rebecca was listed as the head of the household. The adjacent household was headed by Rebecca's half-brother Lewis Walden.10
Death5 Mar 1910 Rachel died on 5 Mar 1910 at age 69.11
Court Record  Rachel died without a will. Her estate included the land left to her in the will of her aunt, Margaret Grinstead. Rachel left a large number of heirs which included siblings and half-siblings as well as the children of deceased siblings and half-siblings. There were too many heirs to divide the land and many of the heirs were minor children. As was customary for the day, a lawsuit was filed in Washington Co. Chancercy Court where one set of heirs asked that the land be sold and the profits divided. This did not indicate a disagreement, but was the vehicle whereby the minor children could be appointed guardians to protect their interests. The case proceeded smoothly and Rachel's land was sold to White Ryburn for $2,870.12
