BirthNov 1841 Eliza Rebecca Hutton was born in Nov 1841.2
Childhood  Eliza spent the majority of her childhood in the home of her maternal grandmother, Isabella Hutton (who was married to Samuel Hutton) in Washington County, Virginia. Eliza appears in some records as Rebecca and in others as Eliza R. In addition, her age was inconsistently reported from census year to census year.4,5,1
Cens-18801 Jun 1880  Samuel Hutton died in Feb. 1880. In June 1880 Rebecca was enumerated living with Isabella, and with Isabella's daughter Rachel.6
Although Rebecca was actually Rachel's niece, the two women were almost identical in age and appear to have had a close relationship.
Will3 Mar 1888  In 1888 Margaret (Hutton) Grinstead [Samuel Hutton's sister] wrote her will while living in Washington County. She left her land to Rachel Hutton and Mary Ellen Hutton, who were described in the will as the daughters of Samuel C. Hutton and Isabella Hutton. Margaret also stipulated that Isabella Hutton be allowed a home on the land. The same provision was made for Rebecca.7
Margaret had inherited land on Hutton Creek in Washington County from her mother Mary Ann (Cunningham) Hutton. But Margaret was widowed in the early 1850s and it is quite likely Rebecca, with Samuel, Isabella, and their children, lived on the land with Margaret.
Devisee1891  Isabella died in 1895. Her will remembered her "granddaughter Rebecca Hutton" with a gift of 2 beds and other household furniture. Isabella's daughter Rachel received similiar items. After remembering several other family members, Isabella left the balance of her estate to Rachel and Rebecca.8
Devisee1892  In 1892 Mary Ellen (Hutton) Ryburn wrote her own will. She left her mother a life interest in her land [being the land left her in the will of Margaret Grinstead] but on Isabella's death the life estate was to pass to Mary Ellen's "sister Rachel M. Hutton and niece Eliza R. Hutton."9
Cens-190014 Jun 1900  Mary Ellen died in 1892, followed by Isabella in 1895. Rebecca and Rachel were enumerated together in 1900, no doubt on the land formerly belonging to Margaret Grinstead. Their household was recorded adjacent to that of Rebecca's half brother, Lewis Walden.2
Cens-19101910  Rachel died in March 1910. Rebecca then lived with Walter Hutton and his family in Bluefield, Mercer County, Virginia. Walter was the son of John Hutton, who was the half-brother of Rebecca's mother Sarah Jane. Rebecca was described as a cousin and identified as Elisa Hutton, single, age 68.10
