BirthCircacirca 1824 Sarah Jane Hutton was born circa 1824 in Virginia.4
She gave birth to a daughter Rebecca Hutton in Nov. 1841.
Marriage15 Mar 1849 Sarah married Lewis Jefferson Walden, son of Lewis Walden and Milly Hunt, on 15 Mar 1849 in Washington County, Virginia.5
Cens-185016 Jul 1850  Sarah and Lewis were enumerated farming in Washington County in 1850. Lewis was 27 and Sarah was 26. One child, 4 month old Joel, was recorded with them.6
Sarah's mother, Isabella, and her husband Samuel C. Hutton lived nearby. Their household included 8 year old Eliza R.[Rebecca] Hutton. [Sarah's daughter]
Widowed20 Aug 1856  Sarah was widowed on 20 Aug 1856 when Lewis died from pneumonia. She was in her early 30s - a widow with 4 very young children including a 4 month old infant. Lewis wrote a will the day he died, asking that his property be sold and the proceeds given to Sarah to help her raise and educate the children.7
29 Mar 1869  In the spring of 1869 Sarah entered into an agreement with one Jannet Buchanan who had inherited land from her father, Samuel Buchanan. Jannet was described in later documents as feeble minded; she had lived at home with her father until his death in August 1867. According to a Bill of Complaint filed against Sarah Jane and her children in 1872 by Jannet's sister, Mary G. Cunningham, the agreement took advantage of Jannet and did not provide her with the support the Waldens had promised in exchange for the land. Sarah Jane chose not to counter the complaint and as a result the land was returned to Mary G. Cunningham as Jannet Buchanan's guardian.8
Cens-Sum2 Jun 1880  Sarah continued to live in Washington County where she raised her family and later in life made her home with several of her unmarried children. In 1880 her household included son James (28), daughter Mary (26) and son Lewis (24). A daughter Almeda, age 16, was born several years after Lewis Walden's death.9,10,4
Deathbefore 1900 Sarah probably died before 1900 as she was not located on that year's census enumeration. She was definitely deceased by early 1910 when the heirs of her half-sister Rachel Hutton filed suit to divide Rachel's estate.11

Research Comment:

Washington County marriage records suggest Lewis was first married (Jul 31, 1845) to a Mary Brown. If, so the following death entry may represent a child born to Lewis and Mary, rather than to Lewis and Sarah as reported: Sarah Walden died 7 Jul 1855 at 8 years of age from inflammation of the brain, daughter of Lewis and Sarah Walden.12,13
