BirthCircacirca 1839 John A. P. Hutton was born in Virginia circa 1839.4
Military6 May 1862  John joined Co. F. of the 63rd Virginia Infantry on May 6, 1862 at Glade Spring, Virginia. They were known as the Glade Spring Rifles. He served throughout the war and was wounded in action on June 22, 1864 near Marietta, Georgia. In January, 1865 he was captured near McMinville, Tennessee and sent to the Union prison at Camp Chase, Ohio where he was held until June. Paperwork created during this time described John as about 5', 6 1/2" tall with light hair and blue eyes. Several of John's brothers and Hutton cousins were part of the same company.5
Marriage1868 He married Susanah Hawthorne Harris, daughter of William Harris and Elizabeth Buchanan, in 1868 in Washington County, Virginia.6,7
Cens-18701870  Interestingly, John and Susannah first settled in Whitfield County, Georgia, which sat about half way between Marietta, Georgia and McMinnville, Tennessee.8
They apparently did not remain in Georgia very long, as their only child Walter was born in Washington County, Virginia, in late 1872.
Land-Sell1 Jan 1878  A few years later they were residing in Tazewell Co., Virginia where, on Jan. 1, 1878 they sold 12 acres of land in Washington County to Margaret Grinstead. The parcel was described as part of the old Samuel Buchanan farm.9
28 Apr 1874  It sat adjacent to 11 acres, also described as part of the old Samuel Buchanan tract, which was sold by John B. Harris to Margaret Grinstead (also to Samuel C. Hutton, his wife Isabella and Samuel's children) on April 28, 1874.

John B. Harris, like Susannah (Harris) Hutton, was a daughter and heir of Elizabeth Hutton, and a grandchild of Samuel Buchanan.10
Cens-18801880  The 1880 census enumerated John (41), Susannah (43) and Walter (7) farming land in Tazewell County, Virginia.11
Deathafter 24 Jan 1891 John died after 24 Jan 1891 on which date he was mentioned in his mother's will.12
