BirthCircacirca 1839 Susanah Hawthorne Harris was born in Washington County, Virginia, circa 1839.1 
Childhood  Susannah's mother died when Susannah was about 7 years old after which Susannah and her two brothers made their home with their maternal grandfather Samuel Buchanan in Washington County. The 1860 census noted that Susannah was employed as a weaver.3,4 
Marriage1868 She married John A. P. Hutton, son of Samuel C. Hutton and Isabella Hutton, in 1868 in Washington County, Virginia.1,2 
Cens-18701870  John and Susannah first settled in Whitfield County, Georgia, near where John had fought during the Civil War.5 
  They apparently did not remain in Georgia very long, as their only child Walter was born in Washington County, Virginia, in late 1872. 
Land-Sell1 Jan 1878  A few years later they were residing in Tazewell Co., Virginia where, on Jan. 1, 1878 they sold 12 acres of land in Washington County to Margaret Grinstead. The parcel was described as part of the old Samuel Buchanan farm.6 
28 Apr 1874  It sat adjacent to 11 acres, also described as part of the old Samuel Buchanan tract, which was sold by John B. Harris to Margaret Grinstead (also to Samuel C. Hutton, his wife Isabella and Samuel's children) on April 28, 1874.

John B. Harris, like Susannah (Harris) Hutton, was a daughter and heir of Elizabeth Hutton, and a grandchild of Samuel Buchanan.7 
Cens-18801880  The 1880 census enumerated John (41), Susannah (43) and Walter (7) farming land in Tazewell County, Virginia.8
