Surname Notes > Any Hutton > One Isabella Hutton or Two?

Was Isabella, daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr, the same person as Isabella, wife of Samuel C. Hutton?

I have not found direct proof that the two Isabellas were one and the same person. However there is significant indirect evidence to support the conclusion.

Isabel, daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr:

  • born between Jan. 21, 1802 and 10 Nov. 18071,2
  • signed 10 Nov. 1828 deeds with an "X" 3,4
  • surname Hutton on 10 Nov. 1828 (single; no husband on deed releases)
  • Isabella's brother John Hutton's 1830 census included a 20-29 year old female in addition to the 30-39 year old who represented John's wife. Several otherwise unidentified children, including a 5-9 year old female, were part of the household.

Isabella, wife of Samuel C. Hutton:

  • born 1806-18075,6
  • daughter Sarah Jane Hutton was born about 1824.7 There is no evidence to suggest Isabella married a Hutton, had daughter Sarah, was widowed or divorced and then married Samuel Hutton. It is more likely Isabella was a Hutton and unmarried at Sarah Jane's birth. An 1872 court deposition stated that Sarah Jane's father was “reputed” to be Samuel Hutton, suggesting he was not generally accepted by the community as such.8 Samuel was 12 when Sarah Jane was born. Other court documents establish that Sarah Jane was Isabella's daughter, but not Samuel's.9,10,11.
  • signed 1891 will with an “X”10

Four of Samuel and Isabella Hutton’s children were given names with ties to the family of James Hutton and Isabel Orr:

  • son James Orr Hutton
  • son Arthur Dixon Hutton
  • daughter Rachel M. Hutton
  • daughter Sarah Jane (James Hutton and Rachel Marshall had a daughter Sarah)

Two of the names, Orr and Arthur, were unique to Isabel Orr's family. Rachel M. was also unique to the James Hutton family in that it was the name of James' second wife, Rachel Marshall, who would have raised James' daughter Isabella. The names Orr, Arthur and Rachel were not part of the Hutton branch to which Samuel C. Hutton belonged.

Misc.:

  • Isabella's grandson, (Samuel) Lewis J. Walden, son of Sarah Jane Walden, was recorded in the household of Robert L. McCall in 1880 and identified as Robert's cousin. Robert McCall was the grandson of John McCall and Martha Orr. Martha Orr was the sister of Isabel Orr who married James Hutton. Hence (Samuel) Lewis Walden and Robert McCall would be second cousins, once removed if Isabella, wife of Samuel C. Hutton was the daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr.12
  • An 1872 Chancery suit, filed by Mary G. (Buchanan) Cunningham against Sarah Jane Walden, included the statement that BF Brown was a kinsman of Sarah Jane Walden. B.F. Brown was married to Frances Jane Crow, a daughter of Ann Hutton, who was the daughter of Arthur Hutton, son of James Hutton and Isabel Orr. Hence B.F. Brown's wife Frances and Sarah Jane Walden would be the first cousin, once removed if Isabella, wife of Samuel Co. Hutton was the daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr.8

The items above, though interesting, carry less weight as Sarah Jane Walden's biologic father is unknown.

  • Isabella's son-in-law, Lewis Walden, appointed James D. Hutton, son of Arthur Hutton (son of James Hutton and Isabelle Orr), as his executor.13

Discussion

Isabella, daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr, was of the same age as the Isabella who married Samuel C. Hutton. Entries for both indicate they could not sign their names. There is no evidence they were two unique individuals. There is reasonable evidence the Isabella who married Samuel C. Hutton was a Hutton by birth.

However, the strongest evidence that Samuel Hutton's wife Isabella was the daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr lies in the names Samuel and Isabella gave their children. Three of those names were unique to the family of James Hutton and his first wife Isabel Orr, or his second wife Rachel Marshall. They were not found in the family line of Samuel Hutton. In fact if we accept that Samuel's wife Isabella was the daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr, we see that Isabella incorporated the name of every one of her siblings or half siblings into the names of 7 of her own children:

Sibling Child
John John (also was Samuel's father's name)
Arthur Arthur Dixon
Jane Sarah Jane
Eleanor Mary Ellen (Mary was Samuel's mother's name)
James James Orr
Rachel Rachel M.
Sarah Sarah Jane

Even Isabella's brothers-in-law were remembered. Samuel and Isabella's youngest son was named Samuel Joseph McCall Hutton, no doubt for his father Samuel and his mother Isabella's brothers-in-law Joseph Snodgrass, Arthur McCall and Thomas McCall. The names Joseph or McCall do not appear among Samuel Hutton's siblings, or siblings-in-law. The only name Isabella seems to have missed was that of her sister-in-law Susannah Hutton, who ironically was Samuel Hutton's sister.

Conclusion:

Isabella Hutton, daughter of James Hutton and Isabel Orr, was the wife of Samuel C. Hutton.

Additional Note:

Samuel's wife is identified, without documentation, on many online family trees as Isabelle or “Ibby” Logan. This appears to be based on the name of the first child listed in Samuel and Isabella's 1850 household, Lilburn Logan Hutton, and may be correct for Lilburn. However, Lilburn was a half- sibling to the children listed under the Discussion section above. For additional information see Lilburn's narrative page and this analysis: Samuel and Isabella Hutton
