MotherEvadna James Buchanan2,4 b. 10 Oct 1827, d. 6 Apr 1868
Birth8 Jun 1860 Nancy Buchanan Stoffle was born on 8 Jun 1860 in Virginia.5,4
Cens-187025 Jul 1870 Nancy was only a young girl when her mother died. She was raised by her father and stepmother.3
Marriage13 Feb 1878 She married William R. Anderson, son of John Anderson, on 13 Feb 1878 in Washington County, Virginia.2
Cens-188018 Jun 1880  Following their marriage William and Nancy lived with William's parents on their farm in Sullivan County, Tennessee.6
The farm was located on Beaver Creek. William's father deeded him the house and 130 acres of land in 1880. However in 1891 William sold the property and moved to land on Reedy Creek Road in Washington County, Virginia.7
Cens-19004 Jun 1900  By 1900 Nancy's circumstances had changed significantly. She was enumerated at the turn of the century as the widowed head of her own household. Nancy reported that she was the mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were living.8
William had died in January, 1893, at which time Nancy was pregnant with a daughter who was born in early June and named Willie, no doubt after her father. Willie died at the age of 5 in 1898. Her headstone calls her "Little Willie."
Cens-191030 Apr 1910  In 1910 Nancy's son "Clen" [Clinton] was enumerated as the head of the household. Nannie was 50 and stated she was the mother of 3 children, all of whom were living [actually this count only reflected the 3 sons with whom she was living at the time]. Sons "Ed" [Edward] and "Ike" [Isaac] were working with "Clen" as farmers/farm laborers on land they were renting in the Goodson District of Washington County.9
Cens-19202 Jan 1920  By 1920 several of Nancy's sons had married. She continued to live with Edward, now 36, and his wife Margaret, age 25. The farm in Goodson District was now described as on Reedy Creek Road [probably the land William and Nancy settled on in 1891]. Nancy's son Clinton and his wife and daughter were enumerated as the adjacent household. The household also included a 9 year old girl named Willie N. Anderson, who was listed as Edward's niece.10
Nancy's son Isaac was married and also living in Goodson District with his wife and in-laws. Son Richard had died in 1911 [possibly the father of the 9 year old "Willie" recorded with the family in 1920?].
Cens-19303 Apr 1930  Nancy remained in the home of her son Edward as his family grew to include 2 children: a son Edward and a daughter Nancie, no doubt named for her grandmother Nancy. By the time of the 1930 census enumeration Nancy was 70 years old.11
Death29 Nov 1938 Nancy died on 29 Nov 1938 at age 78.5
Burial She was buried at Stoffel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5
