Childhood  Clinton's father died in 1893, a few years after moving his family from the Beaver Creek area of Sullivan County, Tennessee to Reedy Creek Rd. in Washington Co., Virginia. The family, consisting of Clinton's widowed mother and his siblings, was enumerated there at the turn of the century.4,2 
Cens-191030 Apr 1910  By 1910 "Clen" was recorded as the head of the household. Although the census indicated that he was married, no wife was listed with him. Instead, the household consisted of Clen, his younger brothers Edward and Ike, and their mother, Nancy.5 
Marriage19 Jan 1915 He married Emma Cunningham on 19 Jan 1915.1 
Widowed8 Mar 1918  Emma died in March 1918, 2 months after giving birth to the couple's second child, a daughter named Nannie Edith. Following Emma's death the couple's older daughter, Emma Irene, was adopted by Emma's sister Cynthia and her husband Charlie Darter.1 
Milit-Reg12 Sep 1918 On 12 Sep 1918 Clinton completed a WWI draft registration form. The paperwork stated that he was of medium height and stout build with blue eyes and dark hair. It noted that he had a crooked wrist. Clinton resided at Benhams in Washington Co.3 [as did his brothers Edward and Isaac who also registered; their younger brother George registered at Knoxville, Tennessee] 
Marriage10 Sep 1919 He married second Louisa Garland Slaughter on 10 Sep 1919.1 
Cens-19202 Jan 1920  Clinton and Louisa lived next to his mother and brother Edward after their marriage. The 1920 census clarified the location as a farm on Reedy Creek Road [which is somewhat south, but in the same general vicinity as the small community of Benhams]. Clinton owned the farm, although it was mortgaged. He was 39 years old; wife Louisa was 18. Also present was Clinton's 4 year old daughter Nannie.6 
Cens-193023 Apr 1930  By 1930 Clinton and Louisa had added 4 children of their own to the family which was again enumerated in the Goodson District of Washington County.7 
  Eventually Clinton and Louisa added 3 more sons and 4 more daughters to their family, bringing the total to 11.1 
Death28 Feb 1954 Clinton died on 28 Feb 1954 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 73.1
