b. 31 January 1831, d. 6 March 1910
FatherIsaac Stoffle3
MotherElizabeth Mumpower2,3 b. abt 1801, d. 1 Mar 1884
Birth31 Jan 1831 Edward Campbell Stoffle was born on 31 Jan 1831.4
Marriage1851 He married first Evadna James Buchanan, daughter of James Buchanan and Nancy Ryburn, in 1851.1
Cens-186028 Sep 1860 The only census recording both Edward and Evadna was taken in 1860. It listed Edward as a 29 year old farmer who owned real estate worth $10,000. Also listed were their four children, Louisa, James, Isaac and Nancy, as well as 58 year old Elizabeth Stoffle.5 [Edward's mother]
Edward and Evadna may have had another daughter who died young and did not appear on any census record. A Louisiana Stoffle who died on Oct. 23, 1856 at age 1 year and 6 months, is buried in the same cemetery as Evadna and James [with no other Stoffles who might alternately be her parents].6
Land-Quit8 Jun 1859  At least a portion of the real estate claimed by Edward on the 1860 census had originally belonged to Evadna's father, James Buchanan, and was part of a tract of approximately 238 acres on Baker's Creek in Washington County.7
Military  According to his headstone Edward was a Confederate soldier.4
Widowed6 Apr 1868  Edward was widowed when Evadna died on April 6, 1868.
Marriagecirca 1869 He married second Charlotte (Rogers) Neill, daughter of Russell B Rogers and Thirza M. (?), circa 1869. Charlotte had been first married to William Bond Neill.8,9
Cens-187025 Jul 1870 Edward and Charlotte were enumerated on the 1870 census with their first child, daughter Elizabeth, born in May 1870. The household was a large one as it also included four of Edward and Evadna's children (Louisa, James, Isaac and Nanny), five Neill children, and Edward's mother.8
Guardian28 Aug 1871 Edward was named guardian of his four children from his first marriage on 28 Aug 1871. The reason for this is not clear at this time.10
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  Edward and Charlotte had at least three additional children together.2
Although Edward and Charlotte were enumerated in Goodson township, Virginia in 1870 and 1880 they may have spent time during those years across the border in Tennessee. The 1880 census reported the place of birth for sons Robert and Wiley as Tennessee.
Cens-190015 Jun 1900  By 1900 the family was living in Bristol (Tennessee side) where they were recorded at 324 Pennsylvania Ave. Edward's occupation was listed as "landlord". Charlotte's entry stated that she was the mother of 9 children but only 5 were living. The couple had been married 30 years. Three of their children were still single and living at home: Bettie (clerk in dry goods store), Wiley (clerk in hardware store), and Mollie (telephone clerk). In addition, Charlotte's 11 year old granddaughter, Lillian Neil, resided with the family.11
Death6 Mar 1910 Edward died on 6 Mar 1910 at age 79.4
Burial He was buried at Stoffel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
