Birth5 Nov 1845 Margaret Lavinia Buchanan was born on 5 Nov 1845 in Howard County, Missouri.4 
Childhood She spent the first years of her childhood in Howard County.3 
Migration  However, after the deaths of her father in 1852 and her brother in 1854, Margaret's mother took her two surviving children and settled in Wayne County, Illinois. 
Cens-State  There the family was recorded on the 1855 Illinois State Census.5 
Legatee20 Jun 1858  Three years later, in 1858, Margaret's grandfather, John Buchanan, writing his will in Smyth County, Virginia, remembered his "two granddaughters in Illinois, daughters of my son William."6 
Marriage She married George Hale.7 
Cens-State1865 A few years after their marriage, George and Margaret were recorded on the 1865 Illinois State Census for Wayne County. A female under the age of ten was listed with them, representing their first daughter, Flora, born around 1863. Margaret would have likely been expecting their second child, Leander.8 
Cens-Sum Later census records clarify that Margaret and George spent their married life farming in Indian Prairie township where they raised a family of ten (obituary) or eleven (1900 census) children, 9 of whom have been identified, including a son named William and a daughter named Julia, no doubt named for Margaret's parents.9,7 
Widowed23 Jun 1893 George died in June 1893 from injuries suffered in a sawmill accident. 
Cens-Sum  Margaret continued to live on the family farm with two of her daughters. Her son William and his wife, and her daughter Lille and her husband were nearby.10,11 
Heir1877 Beginning in 1877 Margaret received a series of payments from the estate of [her great uncles] James, Robert and Mathew Buchanan. Margaret and her sister Mary each received a total of $307, which represented the share that would have gone to their father William had he been living.12,13 
Heir1878  In 1878 the two sisters also shared a $500 payment as their father's heirs from the estate of his sister, Sally Page.2 
Death28 Nov 1919 Margaret died on 28 Nov 1919 in Wayne County, Illinois, at age 74.4 
Burial She was buried at Hale Cemetery in Wayne County, Illinois, although a stone no longer marks the location.4
