Jane Whitely1

b. circa 1768, d. 1833
BirthCircacirca 1768 Jane Whitely was born circa 1768 according to the estimated age on her headstone. In reality she was probably born a few years later.2
Marriage12 Jun 1794 She married first William Scott, son of Samuel Scott, on 12 Jun 1794 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Land-Sell19 Apr 1802 On 19 Apr 1802 Jane and William sold 50 acres of land in Washington County to David Love of Augusta County for $166.67. The land bordered Charles Cummings and others.3
Widowedbefore 21 Jun 1803 William died before 21 Jun 1803 at which time an inventory of his estate was entered at court.
Marriage17 Aug 1809 She married second Moses Edmiston, son of Moses Edmiston and Rachel (?), on 17 Aug 1809 in Washington County, Virginia.4
Moses owned 182 acres south of present day Old Glade Spring Church. He had purchased the land the previous year.5
Land-Sell4 Sep 1812 On 4 Sep 1812 Jane and Moses sold the land Moses had inherited from his father to John Edmiston Jr. [probably Moses' brother] for $1,600. The land was described as that tract on which Moses Edmiston Sr., deceased, had lived and which he had devised to Moses Edmiston Jr. The land had originally been conveyed to Moses, Sr. on 9 Aug. 1778 by [later Col.] William Edmiston and Elizabeth, his wife.6
1815  In 1815 a special tax assesment was recorded for Virginia counties. The entry for Moses noted that he owned 1 farm near the Glade Spring Meetinghouse next to John Roberson [Robinson] and William Byars consisting of 182 acres with a log dwelling house, a log barn and 3 other log "cabbins" [usually slave quarters]. The property was valued at $1,500.7
Widowed16 Jan 1816  Moses died within 7 years of his marriage to Jane. On Jan. 16th, 1816 Moses's estate was inventoried and sold at auction, suggesting he died in Dec. 1815 or Jan. 1816. Jane purchased many of the items. In June 1818 Jane was appointed guardian of the couple's 4 children: David, Sally, Anny and Moses. She posted a bond in the amount of $1,000 in Washington County court on June 16, 1818. Surety was provided by Armstrong Beatie, who at the time was married to Jane's older daughter Elizabeth. Armstrong died in Jan. 1820 and in Nov. 1821 Elizabeth assumed the surety obligation herself.8,9,10
The order of names in the above guardianship record suggests son Moses was the last born child. The child listed before him, Ann, was born abt 1814. Therefore it is likely Moses was born shortly before, or even after, his father's death.
Death1833 Jane died in 1833.2
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County. Jane's daughter Sarah, writing her will in 1883, asked that the space surrounding the grave of Sarah's sister Elizabeth Snead (and others) be enlarged to include the graves of Sarah, her brother and her mother.2,11

The Blakemore inventory lists the name on this stone as James Edmondson (same date and age info as the stone attributed to Jane Edmondson by High On A Windy Hill). The accompanying map places the stone between Sarah Edmondson and John Scott. A photo of the stone taken in 2008 shows that it actually reads Jane, not James.
