[Washington Co., VA WB 6:367-368]

There may be an early connection to the Reeds as one of Samuel & Margaret Hathorn's sons is named Reed. Samuel Hathorn and Peggy Snodgrass were married in Washington Co., VA 22 Oct 1807 by Rev. James Harper. (Peggy is the diminutive of Margaret). Samuel Hathorn/Hawthorn died 12 Mar 1834, age "about 51 yrs." He is buried in Rock Spring Church cemetery. Samuel & Peggy's son Reid T. and Mary Jane Reid (daughter of James & Elizabeth (Swely) Reid) were married 20 Sep 1841 in Washington Co., VA by Rev. Alexander McEwen. Reid T. & Mary Jane (Reid) Hathorn & family were in Dwelling # 1249 of the 1850 census of Washington Co., VA. Margaret Hathorn (age 61, born in PA) and two others were in Dwelling # 1250. (Margaret is probably the widow of Samuel). Margaret's son Bracken D. Hathorn and his family were in Dwelling # 1251. Bracken D. Hathorn is shown as Breckenridge Hawthorn in the 1860 census (dwelling # 1292).

Jane Reid (the unmarried dau. of James Reid) in her 15 Jun 1851 will, left the residue of her estate to be equally divided among her nephews & nieces. In Jane Reid's 26 Aug 1858 executor's account settlement, one of the residuary legacies was Margaret Hawthorn who received an equal share of $140.00. This compiler has not been able to figure out just where in the family this Margaret Hawthorn (who would seem to be a niece of Jane Reid above) fits in. Jane Reid's "niece" Margaret Hawthorn may have been the Margaret A. Hathorn (19 in the 1850 census) who was probably the daughter of Samuel & Margaret Hathorn above as Margaret A. was living in the household of Samuel Hathorn's widow, Margaret.

Also note that Jack Hockett's abstract of settlement for Samuel Hawthorne from WB 7: 137 notes that dau Jane had married John Houston.

Margaret Dryden (dau. of Nathaniel & Mary Dryden) married (1st) James Hope, 21 Feb 1793 in Washington Co., VA (by Rev. Charles Cummings). Children: Polly, James W., Jane & Phoebe Hope. Margaret married (2nd) Isaac M. McQuown 21 Aug 1817 in Washington Co.[, VA (by Rev. Stephen Bovell). [Isaac M. McQuown was a widower who had 1st married Ann Orr]. Margaret & Isaac had one son: Isaac Alexander McQuown. Phoebe Hope, dau. of James & Margaret (Dryden) Hope, married (1st) Thomas Snodgrass, 03 Oct 1824 in Washington Co., VA (by Rev. Alexander McEwen). Phoebe married (2nd) Benjamin Reid, 18 Mar 1835 in Washington Co., VA (by Rev. John Snead).

Note that "Capt." James Orr, Senior (son of Arthur Orr, Senior) and Mary Carson married on 20 Apr 1795, one day prior to the 21 Apr 1795 marriage of Isaac M. McQuown and Ann Orr (dau. of Arthur Orr, Senior). The parents of Mary Carson (Moses Carson & Martha McGrew) never moved to Washington Co., VA. Moses Carson owned tracts of land in Tyrone Township, York (now Adams) Co., and in the south part of Dickinson Township, Cumberland Co., PA (Dickinson Township is north of and borders Tyrone Township). This suggests that both couples may have married in PA in April of 1795 prior to Arthur Orr, Senior buying his 402 acre tract in Washington Co., VA on 21 Jul 1795. It also suggests that Isaac McQuown may have been related to John and/or Lawrence McQuown who both lived in Menallen Township next to Tyrone Township.1
