The following data (unless otherwise noted) was contributed by Bob and Donna Jean Ford. It represents years of research and analysis on the McCall and allied families of Washington County. I am deeply indebted to them for their generosity. Even if you are not researching the McCall family you should look over these entries as many other surnames appear with some frequency. Intro to McCalls of Washington County, Virginia:
Thomas McCALL and his family seem to have been the only McCALLs in Washington Co., VA in the later 1790s as far as we can tell. Thomas and his 4 sons are the only McCALLs in the early Deed, Survey & Will books and Tax lists. The 4 ‘daughters’ of Thomas are the only female McCALLs in the early known marriages. Those 4 female McCALLs would have been too old to be daughters of Thomas' sons John, James, Samuel and Thomas.

There was a Peter McCALL [or McCAUL] that had a 400 acre survey in 1781-1783 on Cove Creek & Livingston Creek on the North Fork of the Holston River. There is a Cove Creek at the west end of Washington Co.

A Peter McCAUL of Sullivan Co, Territory U.S. South River Ohio, on 20 Jun 1792 thru a ‘Deed Poll of conveyance in trust' to Samuel WILSON of Hawkins Co. and Peter McNAMIE of Washington Co., a tract on the waters of the North Fork of the Holston River and both sides of Cove Creek to a fork of Catharines Creek [a misspelling of Ketron Creek (also called Catron Creek, Ketterring Creek, etc.)] which was obtained by a Patent from State of VA that they may be indemnified for their being my securities prosecuting & defending certain suits in Superior Court of Law & Equity of Dist. of Washington in said Territory between John FAGIN of Sullivan Co. Territory ... [Source: Washington Co., VA Deed Book 1:261]. Therefore, Peter McCALL/McCAUL was not living in Washington Co., VA in 1792 and probably sold his 400 acre survey sometime between 1783 & 1792.

There is a reference to his survey on 23 Apr 1832 in a 300 acre deed from Jacob & Mary MILLER to Thomas RINGLEY for a tract located on the North Fork of the Holston River and Cove Creek. This reference to Peter's survey is most likely redundant in that many deeds include references taken off old deeds and surveys rather than naming current adjoining neighbors. MILLER & RINGLEY's deed is found in WCV DB 11:113-114.

There was also an Alexander McCALL that was associated with some of the big names that owned the Salt Works now located Smyth County. He first appears on a deed dated 05 Sep 1833 as far as we can tell.

Children (or probable children) of Thomas & Agness McCALL:

1. John m. Martha ORR. Lived in the upper Baker Creek-McCall Gap area.
2. James m. 05 Jan 1804 to Jane ‘Jenny’ DELAP.
3. Mary m. 15 Aug 1793 to John MONTGOMERY.
4. Samuel m. 12 Feb 1818 to Nancy RAMBO.
5. Thomas m. 1st. Agness MONTGOMERY, 2nd. Nancy ______.
6. Martha m. 31 Oct 1793 to Leonard HUTTON, son of John & Jane (DICKSON) HUTTON.
7. Nancy m. 06 Sep 1796 to Robert HOUSTON, son of Robert HOUSTON, (also spelled HUSTON).
8. Jane ‘Jennet’ m. 10 Oct 1799 to Robert WHITE.

John McCALL is most likely the son of Thomas McCALL, but this has not been proven. John & his "father" Thomas owned land next to each other in Tyrone Township, York (now Adams) Co., PA.

Mary, Martha & Nancy are most likely daughters of Thomas & Agness, but this has not been proven. There were John MONTGOMERY and Robert HOUSTON families that lived in Thomas McCALLs neighborhood that could have been Mary & Nancy’s families. A John MONTGOMERY bought a tract owned by _____? BRITION and there was a BRITION tract bordering Thomas McCALL. Thomas only mentioned one daughter, ‘Jennet’ [or Jane] WHITE, but Agness in her Will wrote "To my daughters ..."

1790 Census of York Co., PA (Adams County was formed from York County in 1800 and one of the Townships that was included in the new county of Adams was Tyrone Township):
McCALL, John - 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 1 female.
McCALL, Thomas - 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 5 females.

John McCALL who owned land next to Thomas McCALL would, in all likelihood, be the son of Thomas. The three males in Thomas’ household would probably be his other three sons -- Samuel, Thomas, & James. The five females in Thomas McCALL’s household would probably be Thomas’ wife Agness and his four daughters -- Mary, Martha, Nancy, & Jane all whom had not yet married.
Was Agness McCALL the mother of all of Thomas McCALL’s children who were: John (b. ca 1768), James, Mary, Martha, Nancy, Jane (b. ca 1775), Samuel (b. 1781-1784), Thomas (b. 1784)?

This is a difficult question. Agness put the following in her 1819 will: “To my daughters,” with no distinction between them, therefore it would seem that all the daughters of Thomas McCALL were Agness’ children. If this is true then Samuel & Thomas who were born after at least some of Thomas & Agness’ daughters would also be their sons. That leaves John & James. All the daughters married before 1800, two as early as 1793. James did not marry until 1804. Even though men usually were older when they married, there was a 10 year span between when James got married and two of his sisters were married. Therefore James has a good chance of being younger than one or more of his four sisters who married before 1800. That leaves John as an unknown. Was Agness John’s mother? If so, John did not name one of his daughters Agness after his mother (unless he had a daughter named Agness that died young). John did name his first son Thomas probably after his father and another son Samuel possibly after his brother. (At least one daughter of Thomas (Martha) died before Agness as Martha’s husband Leonard HUTTON married a 2nd time in 1818). More evidence is needed to determine whether Agness is the mother of John.
Probate information for Thomas and Agnes McCall is presented out of chronological order so that it might be evaluated in support of the above proposed family structure.

Washington County, Virginia:
John McCALL (son of Thomas & Agness McCALL) married Martha ORR (daughter of Arthur ORR, the Elder).

There is no known document available proving the above statement about Martha, but we think there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to justify the statement:

1. Wm. McCALL (who can be proven to be the son of John & Martha (ORR) McCALL) named his 1st born (or 2nd born) daughter ‘Martha Orr.’ Wm. used ‘Martha O.’ as his daughter’s name when he wrote his will. Martha Orr McCALL used her full name when she married Harvey Doak ALLEN on 23 Aug 1859 in Washington Co., VA. [Source: “Washington County Virginia Marriages, 1853-1880,” by Thomas COLLEY, (1997), page 4]. Wm. McCALL did not marry an ORR, he married Elizabeth LOGAN on 28 Jul 1825 in Washington Co., VA. Therefore, Wm. & Elizabeth (LOGAN) McCALL more than likely named their dau. ‘Martha Orr’ after Wm.’s mother Martha (ORR) McCALL.

2. John & Martha (ORR) McCALL named their 1st son ‘Thomas’ (more than likely after his father, Thomas McCALL). John & Martha (ORR) McCALL named their 2nd son ‘Arthur’ (more than likely after Martha’s father, Arthur ORR, the Elder).

3. Arthur McCALL (who can be proven to be the son of John & Martha McCALL) named his 1st daughter ‘Martha Orr.’ Martha Orr McCALL used her full name when she married Wm. Wesley WILLIAMS on 30 Jul 1857 in Washington Co., VA. [Source: “Washington County Virginia Marriages, 1853-1880,” by Thomas COLLEY, (1997), page 416]. Arthur McCALL did not marry an ORR, he married Rachel HUTTON (who was the dau. of James HUTTON & Rachel MARSHALL) on 04 Nov 1828 in Washington Co., VA. Therefore, Arthur McCALL & Rachel more than likely named their dau. ‘Martha Orr’ after Arthur’s mother Martha (ORR) McCALL.

4. Thomas McCALL (who can be proven to be the son of John & Martha (ORR) McCALL) named his 1st daughter ‘Martha Orr.’ (Martha’s middle name of ‘Orr’ can be proven by her death certificate on file in Los Angles Co., CA. Martha Orr SCOTT died 27 Aug 1922). Thomas McCALL married Jane HUTTON (dau. of James HUTTON & Isabella ORR). Therefore, Thomas & Jane could have named Martha for someone on Isabella’s side of the family. But --Thomas & Isabella named their 2nd daughter ‘Isabella’ -- thus Thomas & Jane may have named their 1st daughter after Thomas’ mother Martha (ORR) McCALL.

[John HATTON had previously bought the 177 acres from George GAMBLE & Margaret his wife on 20 Oct 1795 (DB 1:436). GAMBLE had bought the 177 acres from Thomas SAMPSON on 29 Oct 1790 (DB 1:242-243). Leonard HUTTON & Nancy (BAUGH), Leonard’s 2nd wife, sold the tract back to George GAMBLE for $2,150 on 04 Dec 1820 (DB 9:237-239). In August of 1797, the 177 acres was bounded on the west by Arthur ORR, Sr.’s 402 acre tract; Arthur ORR, Sr.’s 174.5 acre tract on the south (that was later owned by Arthur’s son James ORR, Sr.); James REID also on the south (east of ORR’s Middle Fork tract); James SNODGRASS on the southeast; George GAMBLE on the east; and GAMBLE’s 175 acre tract on the north that GAMBLE bought from James TAGART in 1796 (DB 1:487-488). Leonard & Martha’s tract may have been located approximately north of Route 735 with a 15 acre finger of land (see DB 4:381, 388-389) pointing eastward along the upper boundary of the tract that may have been in the vicinity of the intersection of Routes 735 & 736 which is near the mouth of Indian Run where it empties into Hall Creek. Marginal note says “sold to Bartholomew NEAL,” probably referring to the last tract only. [Page 7 of source stated below]

James McCALL [son of Thomas & Agness McCALL] - 1 farm in forks, containing 64 acres, 1 dwelling house, log, 20 feet by 18 feet, 1 1/2 stories high, 1 barn, valued at $288.00. [Note: the ‘forks’ referred to a large area where Thomas McCALL, the REID/REEDs, SPEER/SPEARs, McQUOWNs, MONTGOMERYs, MICKLEs, RYBURNs, HOUSTONs, and others had lived between the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River]. Robert WHITE - 1 farm of poor land in bad repair joining Robert SNODGRASS and the land of Wm. WHITE, deceased, containing 200 acres with a log dwelling house, a log barn, and 2 log “cabbins,” valued at $1000. [Page 30 of source stated below].
[Note - this tract was between 11 Mile Creek (now called Greenway Creek) and Cedar Creek. The east boundary of Robert’s tract bordered the 160 acre tract of Wm. WHITE, deceased. Wm. WHITE had bought the 200 acre tract above from James CAMSON’s estate on 24 Mar 1797, therefore, Robert WHITE may have bought or inherited the tract from Wm. WHITE. Robert SNODGRASS’ land bordered Robert WHITE’s 200 acres on the south and was part of the old Joshua McCORMACK tract on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. McCORMACK’s land bordered the west boundary line of David BEATIE’s 242 acre 1787 survey].

Wm. WHITE married Artimese WEDDING [dau. of Abednego WEDDING] on 09 Jun 1833 in Washington Co., VA, by Rev. Alexander McEWEN. [Source: “The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781-1853,” (1993), by D. E. BROWN, page 66]. Wm. WHITE is probably the son of Robert WHITE and Jane ‘Jennet/Jenny’ McCALL. Abednego WEDDING’s tract bordered the above 160 acre tract of the older Wm. WHITE and the younger Wm. WHITE acquired the western part of Abednego WEDDING’s tract. Also see Jane WHITE, widow of Robert WHITE, who was head of household in the 1850 census of Washington Co., VA, dwelling #579. Wm. WHITE was head of household in dwelling #580. Jane was 75 years old in 1850 and therefore born about 1774-1775. Thus Jane McCALL was about 24 years old when she married Robert WHITE on 10 Oct 1799.

Leonard 1st married Martha McCALL on 31 Oct 1793 in Washington Co., VA. John JONES, Jr., was a Baptist minister. In the Widners Valley community of Washington County, near the intersection of routes 605 and 733, there stands a truly historic landmark. It is the Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church of Christ, one of the few surviving examples of an old-time log meeting house. John JONES, Jr. was the first pastor there. Rush Creek Church is said to have been built in 1822 and Rev. JONES may have served elsewhere during an earlier period of his ministry or the church may actually[ be older (from The Marriages of Washington County, Virginia, 1781-1853, pages 81-82)].
