Family letters written in 1910 indicate Jean was the custodian of William Buchanan's Bible. In 1928 Jean met with Rachel Goode Buchanan (1888-1960) who transcribed Jean's information. The women also had access to a sheet of data recorded from memory in 5 Jan. 1889 by Mathew Hay Buchanan.

The Proclamation of 1763 allowed the Governor of Virginia to issue warrants for a specific amount of land (based on rank) to men who had served in the French and Indian War. The first surveys were made in 1774 and recorded in Fincastle Co. Survey Book A.
