Rachel (?)

d. 1812
Marriage Rachel (?) married Moses Edmiston.1
Land-Buy9 Aug 1778  On Aug 9, 1778 William and Elizabeth Edmundson [Edmiston/Edmondson] sold Moses Edmundson 168 acres on the [waters of the] Middle Fork of the Holston River in Washington County, Virginia, for £25.2
The land sat between the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River and northeast of the present day community of Lodi. It was part of two 1,000 acre parcels William (later Col.) Edmiston received for his service in the French Indian Wars.
Widowed1806  Moses died in the summer of 1806. His will left the land on which the couple lived for Rachel's use during her lifetime. When she died the land would go to son Moses. Moses Sr. also left Rachel a Negro woman Polly and a Negro girl Rose.1
Will4 May 1812  Rachel dictated her own will in May 1812. She instructed that her Negro girl Rose was to stay with her mother Polly for one year. Rose was then to live with Rachel's daughter Hannah Kerr who was to pay Rachel's son David Edmiston one third of Rose's value. At the death of both Hannah and her husband James Kerr, Rose was to go to Rachel's grandson Moses Kerr.

Rachel left Rose's mother Polly to Rachel's son John Edmiston as long as he remained unmarried. Sould he marry, Polly was free to choose her master from among Rachel's sons David or John, or from one of her 4 sons-in-law: Alexander Robinson, John Robinson, David Robinson or Mitchel Robinson. Son John also received Negro boys named Tobe and Jacob and any additional property Rachel did not otherwise devise.

Rachel remembered her sons William and Moses with small cash gifts, and her daughters Nancy Robinson and Rachel Robinson with beds. She also left her clothes to be divided between her daughters Gean[Jean/Jane], Betsy, Nancy and Rachel.3
Death1812 Rachel probably died in the late summer of 1812. Her son Moses and his wife Jane sold the land in which Rachel held a life interest on 4 Sept. 1812.
Will-Recd15 Sep 1812  Rachel's oral will was presented at court on Sept. 15, 1812 by David Kerr and David Robinson who had witnessed it "in the time of her last sicknes at her habitation". Rachel's will appointed David and John Edmiston as her executors. They took the oath of office with John Robinson and Alexander Robinson as their security, having posted a bond in the amount of $2,000.3
