d. before 16 June 1816
Devisee | 12 Apr 1806 | Moses Edmiston Sr. wrote his will in Washington County, Virginia, in the spring of 1806 and died shortly thereafter. He left his land to his son Moses with the understanding Moses' mother Rachel would live on the land during her lifetime.2 |
Land-Buy | 18 Jul 1808 | The younger Moses was already living on a tract of land south of present day Old Glade Spring Church. He purchased the 182 acres from John and Elizabeth Robinson and John Edmiston [the latter two were probably Moses' sister and brother] for £500 in July 1808.4 |
Marriage | 17 Aug 1809 | Moses Edmiston married Jane Whitely on 17 Aug 1809 in Washington County, Virginia.1 |
| | Jane was a widow with 6 small children. |
Devisee | 4 May 1812 | Moses' mother, Rachel Edmiston, died in the late summer or early fall of 1812. She left Moses $2 in her will.3 |
Land-Sell | 4 Sep 1812 | On 4 Sep 1812 Moses and Jane sold the land Moses had inherited from his father to John Edmiston Jr. [probably Moses' brother] for $1,600. The land was described as that tract on which Moses Edmiston Sr., deceased, had lived and which he had devised to Moses Edmiston Jr. The land had originally been conveyed to Moses, Sr. on 9 Aug. 1778 by [later Col.] William Edmiston and Elizabeth, his wife.5 |
| 1815 | In 1815 a special tax assesment was recorded for Virginia counties. The entry for Moses noted that he owned 1 farm near the Glade Spring Meetinghouse next to John Roberson [Robinson] and William Byars consisting of 182 acres with a log dwelling house, a log barn and 3 other log "cabbins" [usually slave quarters]. The property was valued at $1,500.6 |
Death | before 16 Jun 1816 | Moses died before 16 Jun 1816 at which time his estate was inventoried and sold at auction. Moses apparently left no will as John Robinson served as administrator. "Mrs. Edmiston" purchased many items at the auction. Other buyers included John and Moses Edmiston, John, Samuel and Robert Scott, and Andrew Edmiston.7 |
