Name Other  Mary Jane appears to have been known within the family as "Jenny" or even Virginia.4,5 
Moth-DeathJun 1853  Mary Jane was 16 years old when her mother died from pneumonia, one year after giving birth to her youngest child. Mary Jane no doubt helped care for her younger siblings until her own marriage 2 years later. 
Marriage11 Dec 1855 She married Robert Granville Grant, son of James Grant and Jennette McGinnis, on 11 Dec 1855 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
 She was 19 and he was 38. 
Cens-187016 Aug 1870 Fifteen years after their marriage Mary Jane and Robert were enumerated on the 1870 census living in Glade Spring township in Washington County. Robert, a dentist, owned land valued at $3,000 and personal property worth $1,000. Besides Robert (52) and Mary J. (32) the family included James (12), Hugh (8), Martha (6), John (4) and Hetty (2).6 
  The couple's second child, a son named Robert, died at age 3 in Oct. 1862. The years following 1870 were no kinder to the couple. Although 3 additional children were born between 1871 and 1879 they also lost 6 year old John 4 days before Christmas in 1872, followed by 9 year old Martha in the spring of 1873. 
Cens-188012 Jun 1880 By 1880 Mary Jane and Robert had opened their home to other family members. Mary J. Keys (50) along with Samuel Keys (17) and Mattie Keys (14) [Mary's children] joined Robert and Mary Jane's 6 surviving children.7 
Legatee12 Jul 1883  Mary Jane's aunt, Sarah Edmondson, wrote her will on July 12th, 1883. In it she left "her niece, Mrs. Virginia Grant" fifty dollars. She also left "Virginia" her parlor curtains.4 
Cens-19002 Jun 1900  Robert died in 1897 following which Mary Jane lived with her sons William [Frank] and Lacy. At the turn of the century 29 year old William was enumerated as the head of the household. He and Lacy farmed land in the Abingdon district of the county. Mary Jane's son James [d. 1908] and his family lived in the same neighborhood.3 
Death1933 Mary died in 1933.8 
Burial She was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.8
