Birth22 Jun 1801 Robert Scott was born on 22 Jun 1801.1 
Marriage2 Jun 1836 He married Martha Scott, daughter of Obadiah Scott and Jane McCall, on 2 Jun 1836 in Washington County, Virginia.3 
  In 1850 Robert and Martha were recorded on the first census to name all members of a household. Also recorded with them in Washington County were Mary (13), Elizabeth (12), William (8), Sarah (4), and John (2). Daughter Malissa (Martha) joined the family in 1852.4 
  The following year Martha died at age 35, leaving Robert a 52 year old widower with 6 children. His eldest daughter Mary no doubt helped until her marriage in 1855. 
Legatee12 Jul 1883  Sarah Edmondson [Robert's half sister] wrote her will in 1883. She left Robert $50 to be held in trust for the children of Robert's son William who was deceased.5 
Will7 Mar 1885  Robert wrote his will on March 7th 1885. He asked that his debts be paid and that a nice tombstone be placed on his grave and on the grave of his deceased son William. He asked that his property be sold and the proceeds divided equally amongst his five children: Bettie Shaver, Sallie Rambo, Malissa Ryan, Jane Grant and John O. Scott, with the children of his deceased son William E. (John, Charles, James and Burton) receiving their father's share.6 
Death17 Sep 1886 Robert died on 17 Sep 1886 at age 85.1 
Burial He was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Will-Recd28 Sep 1886 Robert's will was recorded on 28 Sep 1886 in Washington County.6 

Research Comment:

According to the Annotated 1850 Washington Co., Census, Robert was first married to Eleanor Meek. A marriage entry for a Robert Scott and a Eleanor Meek does exist for 15 Feb. 1821 however I do not know if this is the same Robert Scott. Robert did not mention children from a first marriage in his will and there are no older children in the household in 1850.
