Birth18 Mar 1856 Mary Elizabeth C. Ryburn was born on 18 Mar 1856 in Washington County, Virginia.2 
Ward24 Oct 1864 When Mary Elizabeth was 8 years old her father died fighting in the Civil War (Battle of Saltville). A few weeks later, on October 24th, 1864, she became the ward of David O. King.3 
Ward22 May 1870  Then in the Spring of 1870, she became the ward of L.O. Byers.4 
  Both of these men were responsible for protecting the interest Mary and her siblings held in the estate of their father. They had also inherited from the estate of their maternal grandmother some years earlier.5 
Cens-1870  In reality the children continued to live with their widowed mother on the family farm in Washington County, Virginia, near the border with Tennessee.6 
Marriage2 Oct 1879 She married Charles C. Carmack, son of Wiley Carmack and Hannah Eliza Carmack, on 2 Oct 1879 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Cens-18809 Jun 1880 Following their marriage Mary and Charles settled on the Tennessee side of the state line. The 1900 census enumerated them living in Sullivan County. Charles's younger brother William lived with them. Charles listed his occupation as "farmer". Mary's brother Samuel Ryburn also farmed in the neighborhood.7 
Migration However Charles and Mary did not establish their home in Virginia, but ventured west to Dallas County, Texas.8 
Cens-190014 Jun 1900  There they were enumerated in 1900, living in the town of Mesquite. Charles was farming; Mary was "keeping house". They had been married 20 years and did not have children.9 
Cens-191010 Apr 1910  By 1910 Mary and Charles were providing a home for Charles's niece Hattie Carmack.10 
  Hattie was the child of Charles's brother James. Hattie's mother Maggie died when Hattie was an infant.11 
Death20 Jul 1911 Mary died on 20 Jul 1911 at Dallas, Texas at age 55.12 
  Charles and Mary both died as a result of a tragic accident. The couple grew vegetables on their farm in Mesquite and delivered them by horse and wagon to several hotels in nearby Dallas. On the morning of July 19, 1911 they happened upon a street in Dallas where road work was underway. As they passed by, a steam boiler blew up, killing Charles instantly. Mary lingered until the following day.8 
  Mary's nephew George Rutherford had also settled in Dallas County. His first son was born in Mesquite in 1897.
