Birth13 Dec 1809 Jane Mathews McConkey was born on 13 Dec 1809 in Washington County, Virginia.1,4
Marriage7 Mar 1844 She married John Ryburn, son of Patrick Ryburn and Jane Stewart, on 7 Mar 1844 in Washington County, Virginia.5,4
Cens-185018 Sep 1850 In the years immediately following their marriage John and Jane appear to have lived with her widowed mother, Jane Sharp McConkey (or she with them).6
Guardian22 Jan 1855 In 1855 John was named guardian of his children John P.S., William J., Samuel W., Margaret M., Sarah J.M. and David K. Ryburn. This was most likely because Jane's mother had died the previous year leaving a share of her estate directly to Jane's children, rather than to Jane.7,2
Cens-18609 Oct 1860  By 1860 baby David had died but another daughter, Mary Elizabeth had joined the family. John reported that year that he owned land valued at $3,500 and personal property of $1,000.8
Land10 Oct 1860 John and Jane's land comprised about 400 acres and straddled the boundary between Washington County, Virginia and Sullivan County, Tennessee. An 1880 deed described it as lying on the main road leading from Abingdon [Virginia] to Paperville, Tennessee. The dwelling place appeared to be in Virginia.9
Religion6 Jun 1852  The family attended church at the Paperville Presbyterian Church in Sullivan County, where records show the baptism of daughter Sarah in 1852.10
Widowed2 Oct 1864 Jane was widowed at age 54 when John was killed during the Civil War at the Battle of Saltville (2 Oct. 1864).
Milit-PensApr 1888 Years later, in Apr 1888 she applied for and received a small pension from the state of Virginia, based on John's service.5
Cens-1870 In the meantime she continued to live on the family farm in the Goodson district of Washington County, Virginia, with her children. There she was enumerated in 1870 with her sons William and Samuel, and her daughters Sarah and Mary. Her daughter Margaret, born about 1850, apparently had also died as she was not named in the guardianship records created after John's death.11
Cens-188018 Jun 1880  By 1880 Samuel and Sarah had married, but William was still living at home with his mother and handling the family farm.12
Daughter Sarah had married in 1875 but died a few years later. Her husband (Robert Rutherford) and son George were enumerated living adjacent to Jane.
Land-Sell7 Jul 1885 In July, 1885 Jane entered into an agreement to sell 12 acres of land to William Rhea. This was part of John's original 400 acres. The balance of the land was owned by her children. Jane's 12 acres lay between 2 parcels owned by her son William which totaled 158 acres. William wished to sell his land and Jane agreed to sell hers in order to faciliate this transaction. However, her dower interest in John's estate was embraced in the 170 acres being sold and the family home also fell on this land. The deed made it clear that Jane was to retain her full dower interest in both the land and the dwelling during her lifetime.13
Death24 Apr 1892 Jane died on 24 Apr 1892 in Sullivan County, Tennessee, at age 82.14
