Birth18 May 1817 William Beattie Campbell was born on 18 May 1817 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
Childhood William was the oldest of a family of 8 children. He spent his childhood in Washington County, Virginia.
Marriage He married Margaret McChesney, daughter of Samuel McChesney and Elizabeth Latham.1
Cens-18501850 The first census year that recorded the names of everyone in a household was 1850. William was recorded that year at age 32 with his wife Margaret (26), and the first 3 of their children: Samuel (5), Ann (3), and David (1.) He reported owning land valued at $1,200, which he was farming.5
Cens-18609 Oct 1860  Ten years later William and Margaret were again recorded, but this year William reported owning real estate worth $2,500 and the family had added daughter Sarah, and sons William, John and Jacob.6
Cens-1860- Slave4 Oct 1860  Three young slave children were also part of the household.7
The family was living near William's cousin, John Ryburn.
Cens-18708 Jul 1870 By 1870 the census locations were more specific and William and Margaret were recorded in Goodson township. Six of their children were still at home; Samuel, the eldest, was not present, and an infant daughter died a few days after her birth in 1865.8
Widowed8 Sep 1872  Margaret died in the fall of 1872 at age 49.
Cens-188018 Jun 1880  The 1880 census recorded William 8 years later, still farming in Goodson district. All of his children were by then adults, and 5 of them (Ann, Sarah, William, John and Jacob) were still single and living with him.9
One of their neighbors was Jane Ryburn, widow of William's cousin John Ryburn. Jane and John's land straddled the Virginia-Tennessee line so it is safe to assume that William's land was also near the border. This is supported by the fact that many family members are buried at the Paperville Cemetery which is in Tennessee.
Death25 Dec 1886 William died on 25 Dec 1886 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 69.3,4
Burial He was buried at Paperville Cemetery in Sullivan County, Tennessee.4
Probate Recd6 Apr 1889 William did not leave a will. His eldest son Samuel was appointed to administer the estate. On April 6, 1889 Samuel presented a paper in court which stated that the heirs and children of William B. Campbell deceased acknowledged that they had each received their share of the estate. The document was dated 25 Feb. 1889 and signed by D.J., John W., W.B., Ann E.B., S.E.R. and J.T. Campbell.10
