Birth6 Jun 1859 Mary Carson Shugart was probably born on 6 Jun 1859 although her headstone reports the year as 1860. However she was enumerated as a full one year old on the 1860 census; had she been born in June 1860 she should not have been recorded at all or at most listed as 1/12 years of age.3,4
Moth-Death6 Feb 1862  Mary's mother died in early 1862 when Mary was 2 years old.
Cens-18803 Jun 1880  In 1880 Mary was enumerated in her father's household in Washington County, Virginia. Her 3 brothers were helping her father run the family farm. They ranged in age from 33 year old Carson to 28 year old Ryburn. Mary, enumerated as "Mollie" was 21. Her 25 year old sister Minerva was also single and living at home.5
Marriage14 Feb 1888 She married William Scott Hutton, son of Joseph Snodgrass Hutton and Sarah Ann Fudge, on 14 Feb 1888 in Washington County, Virginia.2
Prior to their marriage William had migrated west, settling in the southeast corner of the Washington Territory (Columbia Co.) where he was enumerated adjacent to his sister Sarah and brother-in-law Rufus Miller in 1885. After their marriage William and Mary returned to the Washington Territory to live. They were recorded in 1889 living in Whitman County (adjacent to Columbia Co.) with their 1 year old daughter Mary. Mary's brother, Zachariah Shugart and his wife Amanda (Crowe) Shugart had left Virginia in the early 1880s and settled in Idaho. By the late 1880s they had moved to Washington, also settling in Whitman County.6
However, William and Mary Hutton must have missed Virginia as they did not settle "out west" permanently. Their second child, Claiborne, was born back in Virginia in the summer of 1890.
Cens-19007 Jun 1900  Mary and William lived at 23 Mary Street in Bristol, Virginia at the time of the 1900 census enumeration. They had been married 12 years.4
Cens-191023 Apr 1910  Ten years later they were recorded at the same address. Daughter Mary was employed as a teacher at the public school. M.H. Shugart [Mary's sister Minerva Harriet] was also enumerated in the home where she worked as a seamstress.7
Cens-19206 Jan 1920 Sometime before January 1920 William and Mary bought a home at 313 Oak Street in Bristol.8
Occupation  Census records for the years spanning 1900-1920 indicate that William was employed as a "locomotive engineer" on a steam railroad.
Mary's older brother Mathew Ryburn Shugart died in 1889 while working on the railroad.
Death20 Nov 1927 Mary died on 20 Nov 1927 at age 68.3
Burial She was buried at East Hill Cemetery in Washington County.3
