Birth1 May 1833 Joseph Snodgrass Hutton was born on 1 May 1833 in Washington County, Virginia.3,1
Marriage30 Sep 1856 He married first Sarah Ann Fudge, daughter of John Fudge and Nancy Scott, on 30 Sep 1856 in Smyth County, Virginia.4
Cens-18608 Jul 1860  Joseph and Sarah lived near Joseph's parents in the Western district of Washington County There they were recorded on the 1860 census with James, age 2, and William, age 2 months. Joseph reported that he owned personal property valued at $700.5
Widowed5 Oct 1862 Sarah died on 5 Oct 1862, the same day she gave birth to the couple's 3rd child.
Military  Joseph was probably not present when the baby was born. He had enlisted in Company F of the 63rd Virginia Infantry on May 3, 1862 and been detailed as a teamster (wagon driver). He served in that capacity until Jan. 1, 1865 when he was captured near McMinnville, Tennessee and transferred to the Union prison at Camp Chase, Ohio.6
It is likely Joseph's parent's helped care for his young sons and infant daughter Sarah.
Marriage27 Aug 1867 Joseph married second Mary Love Clark, daughter of James Clark and Ann Ryburn, on 27 Aug 1867 in Washington County.1
Mary had been previously married to Robert Henderson and Samuel Pafford, both of whom had died. She did not have surviving children from either marriage.
Cens-18701870 Eight years after their marriage, Joseph and Mary were enumerated together living in Glade Spring township. Joseph's sons from his first marriage, James and William, were with them, as was two year old Ella, the first of the four daughters Joseph and Mary would have together. Missouri Neff, age 21, was living in their home as a housekeeper. She would later marry Joseph's brother James.7
Sarah, Joseph's daughter from his first marriage, appears to have been raised by Joseph's parents. She was enumerated in their household in 1870 and Joseph's father, Arthur Hutton, remembered her in his 1873 will, noting that she lived with him.
Devisee16 Feb 1875  Arthur Hutton, died in 1875. His will provided generously for his children. Joseph received title to the land on which he was living, described as 160 acres known as the old James Meek place. He also received 53 acres comprising the 2 tracts James Clark deeded to Joseph's grandfather James Hutton in 1817. Joseph was to pay Arthur's executors $500 to be used toward the payment of Arthur's debts.8
Cens-18803 Jun 1880 In 1880 Joseph and Mary's household included all 3 of Joseph's children (James, William and Sarah Josephine) as well as Joseph and Mary's four daughters: Ellen, Kate, Fannie and Mattie.9
Cens-190019 Jun 1900  Twenty years later the census taker again enumerated the couple. They had been married 31 years. Mary reported that she had given birth to 7 children, of whom only 4 were living.10
Cens-19106 May 1910  The same question was asked of her on the 1910 census. This time Mary stated that she was the mother of 4 children, all living.11 [neither statement may be accurate]
Death15 Feb 1918 Joseph died on 15 Feb 1918 at age 84.3
Burial He was buried in the Allison-Hutton square at Old Glade Spring Cemetery, Washington County, Virginia.3
