Birth5 Oct 1862 Sarah Josephine Hutton was born on 5 Oct 1862.3
Moth-Death5 Oct 1862  Her mother died the same day.
Childhood  The death of Sarah's mother left Joseph Hutton with 3 children under the age of 5 including an infant daughter. It is likely that Joseph's mother and father (Arthur and Eleanor Hutton) raised Sarah. She was enumerated in their home in 1870 and Arthur Hutton's 1873 will noted that she lived with him. Arthur left Sarah a tract of land, a pianoforte and $500. He did not specifically remember Sarah's older brothers. Arthur Hutton died in Feb. 1875, followed by Eleanor in Feb. 1880. The 1880 census, enumerated 4 months later, found Sarah living with her father, stepmother, brothers and 4 half-sisters.1,4
Marriage1 Sep 1881 Sarah married Rufus B. Miller on 1 Sep 1881 in Washington County, Virginia.5,6
Migration  Around 1884 Sarah (or "Josie" as she appears in many records) and Rufus left Virginia and moved to the southeast corner of the Washington territory. In 1885 they were recorded farming land in Columbia County; in 1889 Rufus worked as a stockman in adjacent Adams County. Sarah's brother William Hutton also made the move [although he eventually returned to Virginia].7,8,9
Cens-190012 Jun 1900  In the late 1890s the family moved to Nez Perce County, Idaho, where they were recorded living on a rented farm at the turn of the century. Sarah was stated to be the mother of 5 children, all of whom were living and recorded at home as: Myrtle (14), Virgil (12), Robert (10), Blanche (4) and Frank (1). Frank was born in Idaho; the other children were born in Washington.10
This list of children conflicts somewhat with the Washington territorial census. In 1885 Rufus and Sarah's household included a 3 year old child Sarah E. and a 1 year old male "M.M.", both born in Virginia. The 1889 census entry included 6 year old S.C. (presumably Sarah E. from 1885), a 3 year old female "M.M." and a 1/2 year old male "J.M". The 3 year old female recorded as M.M. in 1889 probably represents the 14 year old daughter listed as Myrtle in 1900. She may also have been erroneously listed as a 1 year old male "M.M" in 1885.

However the 1900 census listed Myrtle's date of birth as Jan. 1886 which, if correct, means she was not present at the time of the 1885 territorial census. Was there a boy with the same initials who died between 1885 and 1889? Sarah's 1900 entry states that all of her 5 children were living yet Sarah, b. abt 1882 was not one of the 5 children enumerated in the 1900 household. In addition, the infant "J.M." on the 1889 census would appear to be Robert, (b. Oct. 1889) on the 1900 census, yet the names don't match.
Cens-191023 May 1910  By 1910 the family had moved into the village of Kamiah where they ran a lodging house. Two children were enumerated with them: Franklin T. (11) and Maud E. (9). This census listed Josie as the mother of 9 children, with 7 living.11
It is possible Sarah had 4 children, including Maud, following the 1900 census, but it seems more likely Sarah's 1900 entry only counted the children still at home. It also seems likely that Myrtle's year of birth was incorrectly listed in 1900 and that she may have been the person indicated as the 1 year old male on the 1885 territorial census.
Death23 Nov 1912 Sarah died on 23 Nov 1912 in Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho, at age 50.3
