He was listed as Beattie R. in guardianship records filed after his father's death. The 1850 census listed him as Ryburn Worley, the 1860 census listed him as Bailey, the 1870 census as Riban, and the 1880 census listed him as B. Ryburn Worley. 
Cens-18609 Oct 1860 He was living at home with his widowed father and seven younger siblings in 1860. He was 19 years old and listed his occupation as "farmer."7 
Military  During the Civil War Beattie fought with the Confederate forces.8,9 
Marriage License20 Dec 1865 He and Virginia J. Blackley obtained a marriage license on 20 Dec 1865 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.10 
Cens-187020 Jul 1870  After the war ended "Ryburn" and Virginia settled in Goodson township, Washington County, Virginia, and raised a family which in that year included George, age 3, Amanda, age 2, and baby Beattie, born in March. Ryburn owned real estate worth $1,000.11 
Cens-188016 Jun 1880  Ten years later they were still farming in the Goodson district of the county. Their family had grown by the addition of son Taylor and daughter Virginia.1
