Birth1813 John Brackenridge Beattie was born in 1813 in Virginia.3
Migrationcirca 1844  In the mid 1840s John's parents left Virginia and settled in Andrew County, Missouri.4
Fath-Death10 Nov 1847  John's father died in 1847. His will left his Andrew County land to John and his brother Armstrong; in exchange they were to care for their mother.2
Marriage John married Sarah Jane Cole, daughter of Peleg Cole and Polly Todd.5
John and Sarah did not have children of their own but opened their home to many young people. Some were the children of family members; some were not. In 1850, 1860 and 1870 they were enumerated farming in Andrew County's Platte township. Besides John and Sarah the 1860 household included John Scott (12) and several members of the Rouse family. In 1870 the household included Ann E. Beattie (6), Emett Rouse (20), Frank Cole (23), Francis Williams (21), Samuel Allison (11), and several members of the Pollard family. John's farm was valued at over $8,000 that year; his personal property at over $2,000.6,7,8
Cens-18801880  In 1880 their residence was listed as Empire township [Empire township was created from part of Platte township in 1872 so this does not indicate John and Sarah moved] and the household included John and Sarah with several young people who were listed as nieces or nephews: James B. Cole (24), Lyda Beattie (15), Florence Cole (7), and John Cole (4, b. OR).9
James B. Cole was the father of Judge Redmond Cole, who years later conducted extensive research into the Beattie and related families. Judge Cole was born in John and Sarah Jane Beattie's home in 1881. Years later he wrote that John was known in the family as "Uncle Brack". He also noted that John and Sarah lived about 6 miles east of Savannah, Missouri.1
Will5 Feb 1884  John wrote his will on 5 Feb 1884 He left Sarah the use of all his land, money and personal property during her lifetime. On her death the bulk of the estate was to go to John's niece Lidia Fulkerson with the remainder to be divided between John B. Cole and Sarah J. McCarty. James B. Cole was to receive $500.10
Codicil11 Nov 1886  However in Nov. 1886 John added a codicil to the will. Rather than a share of any land not specifically left to Lidia Fulkerson, John B. Cole was left $100. Sarah J. McCarty (described as a niece) received the balance of the land not designated for Lidia. John also revoked the $500 he had intended for James B. Cole.11
Death4 Jul 1889 John died from paralysis on 4 Jul 1889 in Andrew County, Missouri.12,13,14,3
Burial He was buried at Bedford Chapel Cemetery in Andrew County, Missouri.3

Research Comment:

Lidia (Beattie) Fulkerson appears to have had an especially close relationship with John and Sarah. Lidia erected a monument to them at Bedford Cemetery, engraving it from "daughter Lidia Fulkerson". Lidia's own death certificate names John and Sarah as her parents. However, she was in fact John's niece.
