Birth1822 Sarah Jane Cole was born in 1822 in Virginia.3,4
Marriage She married John Brackenridge Beattie, son of David Beattie and Nancy Clark.1
John's family left Virginia in the mid 1840s and settled in Andrew County, Missouri. John and Sarah also made Andrew County their home.
John and Sarah did not have children of their own but opened their home to many young people. Some were the children of family members; some were not. In 1850, 1860 and 1870 they were enumerated farming in Andrew County's Platte township. Besides John and Sarah the 1860 household included John Scott (12) and several members of the Rouse family. In 1870 the household included Ann E. Beattie (6), Emett Rouse (20), Frank Cole (23), Francis Williams (21), Samuel Allison (11), and several members of the Pollard family. John's farm was valued at over $8,000 that year; his personal property at over $2,000.5,3,6
Cens-18801880  In 1880 their residence was listed as Empire township [Empire township was created from part of Platte township in 1872 so this does not indicate John and Sarah moved] and the household included John and Sarah with several young people who were listed as nieces or nephews: James B. Cole (24), Lyda Beattie (15), Florence Cole (7), and John Cole (4, b. OR).7
Death1884 Sarah died in 1884.4
Burial She was buried at Bedford Chapel Cemetery in Andrew County, Virginia.4

Research Comment:

Lidia (Beattie) Fulkerson appears to have had an especially close relationship with John and Sarah. Lidia erected a monument to them at Bedford Cemetery, engraving it from "daughter Lidia Fulkerson". Lidia's own death certificate names John and Sarah as her parents. However, she was in fact John's niece.
