Birth9 Sep 1825 Mathew R. Buchanan was born on 9 Sep 1825 in Virginia.2,3
Childhood Mathew's childhood was spent in Washington County, Virginia. As a young man he migrated to Missouri with his family.
Marriage30 Jan 1845 He married first Lucy A. F. Clarkson on 30 Jan 1845 in Howard County, Missouri.4
Cens-18501850  The 1850 census recorded Mathew and Lucy in Scotland County, Missouri with their four year old son Francis. Also living with them was 14 year old Prescilla Clarkson.5
Widowed28 Oct 1858  Lucy's death in the fall of 1858 left Mathew a widower with two young children, Francis and Etta.6
Cens-186013 Jun 1860  Two years later he and the children were enumerated living with William and Margaret Buchanan [his parents]. John Clarkson was the adjacent household and William Samuel Clarkson [married to Mathew's sister] was also close by.7
William Buchanan owned land in Scotland County adjacent to both William Samuel Clarkson and John Clarkson.8
Marriage14 Apr 1861 He married second Louisa Allen on 14 Apr 1861 in Scotland County, Missouri.9
Cens-1870Jun 1870  Nine years later Mathew and Louisa were enumerated in Scotland County with their own four children, who ranged in age from 8 years to 9 months [Mathew's son Francis had married in 1866 but Etta's whereabouts in 1870 is not known].10
Land1876  Mathew owned 63 acres of land in Scotland County in his own right by 1876. Although it was located in the same township and range as the land indicated for his father on the 1858 map it was not located in the same section.11

Burial He was buried at Camp Ground Cemetery in Scotland County with both Lucy and Louisa.2

Research Comment:

Previous researchers have suggested that the maiden name of Mathew's first wife, Lucy, was Bridges. However they have not been able to locate a marriage record in support of that claim. Instead, the evidence suggests Lucy's maiden name was Clarkson. She was most likely a daughter of Richard Clarkson and therefore a sister of William Samuel Clarkson who married Mathew Buchanan's sister Mary Ann. Mathew Buchanan and Lucy Ann Clarkson's marriage was recorded in Howard County, Missouri in January, 1845. Mathew's family is known to have been in Howard County by 1843 as his younger sister Eliza was born in Howard County in July 1843.4,15,16
