Although he initially signed on as a private, he served as a sergeant for much of the 12 months the regiment existed.

After briefly returning home he enlisted, on July 19, 1862, in the 5th Regiment, Texas Partisan Rangers, in which he served as Captain of Co. H. Records created during this time show that he was often assigned to duty in Indian Territory. John served with the 5th Regiment for an additional 3 years.7,8
Migration  After the war the families moved further southwest, settling in present day Hood County.
The official enumeration date for the 1870 census was June 1st. This meant each household was to be recorded as it existed on that date. Therefore, when the Hood County enumerator finally reached the McCamant household in late September, he included India in the enumeration although she had died the previous month.
Cens-187027 Sep 1870  The record stated that she and John were sharing a household with Alexander and Sallie McCamant. John reported that he owned real estate valued at $1,000 and personal property of $1,500. He listed his occupation as "Merch ret". Residence  In the early 1880s John (and Ruby?) lived in Ft. Worth, Texas. He then settled in Jones County where he operated a mercantile business.8
Ruby died prior to the summer of 1900 at which time the census noted that John was widowed. His household on that year's enumeration consisted of himself and his 13 year old son Edwin. Edwin married around 1905 but John continued to live with his son and his family. The younger man was employed as a grocery merchant.11,12

Burial He was buried at Abilene Municipal Cemetery in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.13
India and John married in Hunt County and lived there for some years before moving on to present day Hood County where India died in Aug. 1870. Both Hunt and Hood Counties may be located on the Texas map.
John and Ruby lived in Grayson County. John also lived in Jones County. He died in Taylor County. These counties can also be located on the Texas map.
