Birth16 May 1840 India Campbell Gardner was born in Washington County, Virginia, probably on 16 May 1840 (per family Bible record) however her headstone uses May 20th.3,4
Childhood  India spent the earliest days of her childhood in Washington County followed by several years in neighboring Smyth County.5,6
Migration  Her parents migrated to Texas after the 1850 census enumeration, taking 6 of their 9 children west with them. The lived briefly in Lamar County before settling in Hunt County.
Marriage23 Feb 1858 She married John Dickenson McCamant, son of Samuel McCamant and Matilda Dickenson, on 23 Feb 1858 in Hunt County, Texas.7,8
 She was 17.
Cens-186013 Jul 1860  India and John settled in in Hunt County, Texas, which was also the county of residence of India's parents as well the place of residence of her sister Sallie who was married to John's brother Alexander.9
During the Civil War John served for 4 years, fighting for the Confederate Army as part of the 1st Texas Cavalry and then the 5th Regiment of Texas Partisan Rangers.
Migration  After the war the families moved further southwest, settling in present day Hood County.
Death25 Aug 1870 India died on 25 Aug 1870 at Granbury, Hood County, Texas, at age 30.10,8
The official enumeration date for the 1870 census was June 1st. This meant each household was to be recorded as it existed on that date. Therefore, when the Hood County enumerator finally reached the McCamant household in late September, he included India in the enumeration although she had died the previous month.
Cens-187027 Sep 1870  The record stated that she and John were sharing a household with Alexander and Sallie McCamant. John reported that he owned real estate valued at $1,000 and personal property of $1,500. He listed his occupation as "Merch ret". Three children were also listed for the couple: Cattie (10), Lemy [?] (8) and Alexander (3).11
Burial She was buried at Granbury Cemetery in Hood County, Texas.10,8
Following India's death John married Ruby McClinton. They were enumerated in Grayson County, Texas in 1880 with 3 children, who appear to be John and India's: Hattie (17), Lizzie (13) and Alexander (11).12,13
