FatherSamuel William Moore2 b. 24 Mar 1782, d. 5 Nov 1853
MotherAnn Rebecca George Buchanan b. 13 Nov 1791, d. 10 Mar 1870
Birth21 Jan 1826 Andrew Fullen Moore was born on 21 Jan 1826 in Virginia.3
The Moore Family Bible is reported to contain a second Andrew Moore birth entry on the same page. It reads "Andrew Moore was born January the 26th 1824" Although the 1826 entry is more consistent with the ages reported for Andrew on later census records the appearance of the second bible record is perplexing.
Marriage11 Jan 1849 He married Bethia Buchanan, daughter of William Buchanan and Jane Keys, on 11 Jan 1849 in Washington County, Virginia.1,4
Cens-18501850  Andrew and Bethia were enumerated in Washington County, Virginia, the year following their marriage.5
Widowed  Bethia died in 1854, following the birth of the couple's second child, William. A daughter, Margaret, born in 1852, died in 1859.
Marriage15 Dec 1858 He married Martha Rosenbalm, daughter of Valentine Rosenbalm and Mary (?), on 15 Dec 1858 in Washington County, Virginia.6
Cens-18609 Aug 1860  In 1860 Andrew and Martha were enumerated with their first son, 9 month old Charles. Andrew stated he owned real estate worth $4,000 and personal property valued at $2,000.7
William, Andrew's son from his marriage to Bethia, lived with Andrew's widowed mother.8
Andrew and Martha are known to have had at least 4 children together: Charles (b. 20 Nov. 1859), Susan Josephine (b. abt 1861), Milton Floyd (b. Jun 1862) and Mary Fullen (b. 19 Aug. 1864). However, there exists in the Washington County death registers an entry for a Margaret E. Moore who may represent an additional child.9
Military  During the Civil War Andrew served in Company F of the 37th Virginia Infantry which was known as the Glade Spring Rifles. He is reported to have died either in prison or in the hospital.10,11
Death9 Jun 1864 Andrew is reported to have died on 9 Jun 1864 at age 38.12
Probate Recd24 Sep 1866  An appraisal of Andrew's estate was ordered on November 28th 1864. Although the sale of his estate likely occurred shortly thereafter it was not recorded in Washington County court until September 1866. Martha Moore and Valentine Rosenbalm were the only buyers.13
Probate Recd28 Jul 1874 A settlement record for Andrew's estate was filed on 28 Jul 1874. It listed payments to Valentine Rosenbalm, M. H. Buchanan and many payments to R.B. Preston and wife.14
Probate Recd28 Apr 1875 An additional record, dated 28 Apr 1875 again listed payments to R.B. Preston.15
Andrew's mother was a sister to Mathew, James and Robert Buchanan, who left a sizeable common estate in Washington County and who did not marry. On the death of the last surviving brother their assets fell to the heirs of their married siblings. Andrew was one of his mother's heirs but he was also deceased by 1878 when the first payments were made from the Buchanan brothers estate. Therefore equal payments were made to William J. Moore [Andrew's son by Bethia], and to George Graham, as guardian of Andrew's 4 children [from his marriage to Martha].16,17

Research Comment:

It is unclear at this time why the bulk of the payments from Andrew's own estate went to R.B. Preston and wife. Andrew's brother John had a daughter Isabella who married Reuben Preston; this may have been the individual referred to in Andrew's settlement records but why would Isabella and Reuben Preston have received the bulk of Andrew's estate when Andrew had living children?
