Widowed5 Apr 1848 William was widowed in the spring of 1848 when Mary died soon after giving birth to their third child, a daughter who did not live through the summer. 
Marriagecirca 1849 He married second Esther Maxwell circa 1849.5,6 
Cens-18501850  William and Esther, along with the 2 surviving children from William's first marriage made their home with William McConnell Sr.5 
  William and Esther added a son of their own about 1851.

Burial He was buried at Green Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2 
  William's father wrote his will in 1853. He referenced his deceased son William K. McConnell (which clarifies that the 1859 year of death sometimes reported for William K. is incorrect). The elder William also stipulated that Esther was allowed to remain in his home as long as the family stayed together.2 
Probate Recd15 Feb 1856  Final papers settling William's estate were filed in February, 1856. Esther, as widow received her dower interest in the estate. Distributive shares were also recorded for John F. Preston as guardian of Sarah E. and David C. McConnell and for Alexander Maxwell as guardian of Thomas M. McConnell.6
