Childhood David's mother died in 1848 when David was two. In 1850 David was enumerated with his father and his father's second wife in the household of David's grandfather, William McConnell in Washington County, Virginia.5
However by 1860 David's father was also deceased. David and his sister Sarah then went to live with Jacob Campbell [their mother's younger brother] who himself died in 1863.6
Cens-18701870 Sometime between 1860 and 1870 David moved west with yet another of his mother's sisters. The 1870 census recorded him living and working as a farm laborer in the household of his Aunt Anne and her second husband James Clark in Warren township, Marion County, Missouri.7
David eventually made his way to Adams County in the state of Washington where he was enumerated at the turn of the century in the town of Ritzville. He was employed as a bookkeeper at a bank. David stated that he had been married 13 years but no wife was recorded with him. He lived with a Jesse and Maria Turner.
David settled in the town of Prosser (Washington) in 1902 when he went to work for a bank there. An article published at his death said he was a "gentleman of the old southern school", and was universally loved and respected. The article also said that thought he talked little of himself, it was known that he had served in the Confederate Army and that he had a son in California and a daughter in Florida.8
Death9 Aug 1908 David died of heart failure on 9 Aug 1908 in Washington at age 62.1
Burial He was buried at Sinking Spring Cemetery in the Campbell square, along with members of his mother's family.1
