Residence | | The couple lived on the right bank of the the North fork of the Holston River, a few miles upstream from Mendota. Their home, a two story log structure, commanded a beautiful view of the river valley. A family cemetery was located about a hundred yards north of the home.2 |
Anecdote | | Abraham was apparently a merchant as well as a farmer. An old account book, held by a descendant, contains what appears to be a whiskey recipe, as well as other records related to his still.2 |
ChildDeath | | Two of Abraham and Mary Ann's children died in 1814. Son Jeremiah died in August at 15 months, followed a month later by 7 year old Polly. Polly was survived by her twin sister Isabella. In 1821 the couple also lost daughter Harriet who died at 10 months. |

Cens-1850 | 24 Sep 1850 | Ten years later Abram was recorded on the first federal census to list all members of a household by name. "Abram" was stated to be a 75 year old farmer. He owned land valued at $1,500. John Harlow, an 18 year old laborer, lived with him. Abram's sons William, John, and Berryhill were all enumerated nearby as heads of their own households.7 |
Will | 14 Jan 1854 | Abraham's will, dated January 14th, 1854, left $200 to his grandson William Shankland, "the legacy intended for his mother Elizabeth Shankland". He also left his daughter Isabel Shankland, wife of James H Shankland, $100 over and above his other children plus an equal portion of the estate with the exception of two Negros. To his three sons, William M., John and Berry H. Gobble, Abraham left the balance of his estate which was to be equally divided with Isabel. He also clarified that the Negro Amy and her son Peter were to live with his three sons until Peter came of age. At that time Amy and Peter could choose to remain slaves or have their freedom. They were not to be sold out of the family. Abraham also left Amy her bed, bed clothing, and as much of the kitchen furniture as she wished.8 |
